Not child friendly

Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2008
My husband and I live in the University's Summit View apartments. These are the ones across from the football stadium. These are sooooo old. My grandparents actually lived in them when they attended. Anyway, we went for them because ALL utilities are included. Internet, cable and phone are on this list. Anyway, I was really upset because as I was signing the lease the staff member casually mentioned that these apartments still had lead paint in them. I told them I have a 2 year old and what should I do. He said, "Just don't let him put his hands in his mouth alot." Right. No one in the office has kids. So although the University's site makes it look like these apartments are for families, they really aren't in my opinion. I'm sure the newer ones would be a lot nicer. However, the waitlist is generally over two years long for those. Also, there's absolutely no ventilation in the bathroom. There's a window, but when it's 12 below zero we didn't want to open that. So mold was a huge issue. It was disgusting, it really made my entire apartment stink. I called the office and they said that this was normal and to use bleach on a rag to scrub it off. That's great but I'm not tall enough, so I put it on the end of my swiffer. That worked but the mold was back within a couple of weeks. We also got notices that children's toys aren't allowed to be kept outside. We ignored them and nothing happened, but like I said earlier, these aren't really child friendly. There's also a knee-high heater in my son's room that I was afraid he'd burn himself on and the apartment just looked at me like I was stupid. Same thing with the doors that have no dead bolt or anything. I was afraid my son would get outside (the doors don't lock on the inside)and they weren't willing to at least fix the lock on the screen door or allow me to put up a dead bolt. So, there are all of my complaints. On the bright side, it's a relatively safe neighborhood. There are several playgrounds on the premises all within walking distance. That was nice. However, I would have never rented had I known about the lead paint or the office staff's insensitivity to children and family matters. Also, some of the play areas out back are completely overgrown with goat heads and tumbleweeds and the staff never tends to them. The laundromat is close, but very expensive. We hang our clothes to dry in our little storage room. I hate the apartment and can't wait to be out in May.
