Resident 2006

5/18/2008

Initial Post: December 15, 2006 Ok... I'm moving to Hillwood Pointe in a few days. It looks like a nice place, their literature is professional, the model apartment looks good and at first contact, the staff is friendly. Yet I have some reservations that will only be addressed after I've signed the lease. Here are my observations/experiences so far... When I contacted the staff at the end of November and told them I needed a two bedroom on December 15, The assistant manager said they had one available if I put down a $150 deposit and a $10 ($5 per adult) application fee. They also offered a nice '$400 off the first two months' special (nice)! I came in a couple of days later and filed the application and paid the deposit and fees. The staff member there that day said I was good to go for a move in on the fifteenth and gave me the apartment number. She also told me this was her first day back there in three years. She had been called back there for one day to run the show while the entire rest of the sales staff was out sick (It seems the staff had passed around a flu bug as often happens with any office group). I filed the application and wrote the checks. Now when conducting an operation like this, I like things to go smoothly. So when I called back a couple of days later to check on the application and the transition details, I found that the assistant manager was back, though still slightly under the weather. I expressed my sympathy at her condition and asked if I could see the apartment listed on the application. She told me it was against policy to show the actual apartment until the day the lease was ready to be signed... move in day. (Red flag?) She reasoned that they needed time to clean and prepare the apartment before the new tenants could see it. That seems like a logical reason so I agreed with Hillwood... with reservations. I mean... I'm no idiot. I know there could be worlds of difference between the model and the actual apartment they expect real people to move into. Worst case? The day of the move, I see the apartment and find it s a dump while the movers and the truck are waiting outside to unload. But based on my impression of the staff I'm gonna trust them on this one. Sure, Hillwood Pointe is in business to make money for their owners. But good business practices dictate they won't screw the community they are trying to serve. That is what I am basing my trust. I filed my change of addresses with the Post office, utilities and informed the moving companies of our new address. We sent out emails to our families and business associates. A week later, I called in again and the assistant manager told me that the people in the assigned apartment had not moved and they had another apartment that would be ready on December 22... a week later than the original move in date. I still trust that they are shooting straight with me. I mean, it could be happening the way they are saying. So I called my current apartment complex and asked them if we could stay another week and they generously allowed us to stay. (Capitol Towers - Manager, Jim Carrey, an honest businessman. If things go well for our last few days living at Capitol Towers, they'll get a 5. I don't give out such high ratings when they are not deserved.) I called Hillwood and accepted the apartment change. To their credit, they gave me an apartment with a patio at no extra cost over the one-year lease. I sent out corrections in my change of address notices. A hassle, but nothing in life is easy. The story is not over. They still won't let me look at our future home until the move in date. So we are moving in toward the end of December. Stay tuned and I'll update how it goes. I'll give the new apartment complex a 'five' for now. It will be up to their management and staff to maintain that rating as we share our lives at Hillwood Pointe Apartments. UPDATE: November 8, 2007 The movein went well and everything was good. We are satisfied with the staff (but had only infrequient interaction with them) and the location. Maintenance has ALWAYS been on the spot when we called. Two months we noticed a big roach in the kitchen. Where there are one, there are others. We told the staff and they have been spraying constantly since. We see an occasional bug, but nothing so bad, I guess. (One bug is bad, of course. But one every three or four weeks is livable. Since we are on the ground floor, they could have come in through the front door like the people do.) When our one year lease came due, they didn't offer to raise the rent if we offered to sign a new lease. But if we didn't decide to sign another lease, we could rent month to month for an additional $100 a month. I'll recommend this place. No place is heaven, but for basic living, this place will do. We're moving out this month (military reassignment) and I hope our next place is at least as nice as our home at Hillwood Pointe. UPDATE: Sunday, May 18, 2008 This update is months overdue. In February (two months after we moved out of Hillwood Pointe Apartments), my wife and I received a nice suprise... A CHECK FOR OUR DEPOSIT!! There are so many places that keep your deposit as a matter of course that we totally weren't expecting to see ours! Well, THERE IT WAS! Like I said before: No home is heaven. But Hillwood Pointe Apartments is trying their best to approach that level. They are honest people and will do their best to make you happy. I recommend Hillwood Pointe Apartments. Since I've been gone for months and will not return, you can be sure this is an honest endorsement.
