Resident 2004 - 2005

3/23/2005

The most important thing to understand about living on Cameron Road is that no one wants to be living on Cameron Road once they spend a month there. With that in mind, I'll start with the (few) pros:

1) It is generally quieter than surrounding properties. Of the various complex on the Cameron Road shuttle route, it is probably the best in terms of upkeep of the units.

2) Brand new air conditioning units save you on utilities. You also only pay for what you use, water/gas aren't fixed per resident (as they are at most complexes).

3) Free Internet and Cable, this saves you about $100 a month, and Grandecom is reliable as hell.

Far outnumbered by the cons:

1) Do not be fooled, Cameron Greens does not have a high student population. It is funny that all the supposed 'raving' reviews below always mentioned students, but the reality is there is not a high concentration of students here. The ones that are here are typically too scared to venture out around the property, aside from the shuttle stop, to class and to party in West Campus.

2) My car was broken into. When I moved in, I had to sign an agreement with Americorp security about quiet hours, etc. When I asked management about why my window was broken from anywhere between 3 and 6 hours without Americorp calling me (since I'm assuming they have plates with phone numbers of residents), I was told that they were no longer on property. That's right, the only sense of security was removed without notification to **any** of the residents. They send us notices that they are cleaning the parking lot, but they don't when they remove something that existed when most of the residents signed their lease. Gee, I wonder why? When I asked about this, I was told, 'well they don't work for free you know.' No ----, that doesn't make it right to do so without notifying the residents.

3) Infestations of German and American cockroaches EVERYWHERE. No rats, nothing that bites, but still sick and disgusting. Once again, this is a problem that management COULD fix if it spent enough money on extermination. But, they choose not to.

4) My oven feels like it is twenty years old, and I'd wish they'd replace it, I had filed two maintenance requests about the smell of gas and they just changed the gasline, if they had bothered to turn on the oven afterwards for 5 minuted they'd see it's setting off my smoke detector.

#3 and #4 are to be expected, you get what you pay for. #2 is downright unethical, and only happened after Tarantino property management took over - Beach Front Properties, that managed until the end of 2004, still had the on-site security. Other than #2, the management has been nice and helpful, the problem is not with them but with the neighborhood in general. The management doesn't want crime problems, but anything in 78723 seems to have to deal with it. That is why removing the security patrol does not make sense if they mean what they say.

The rule of any 78723 zip code properties is 'you get what you pay for.' If you are a student, this isn't a horrible experience but there are issues with the neighborhood that stem from the fact it is generally lower-income housing. The same quality unit on Red River would cost $100-$200 more and probably not have free Internet and TV.
