Resident 2000 - 2001

11/26/2005

My roommate lived in these apartments for 2 years - I moved in with her the second year.
This place was a complete hell hole (parking was poorly lit, air conditioner broke several times and wasn't fixed, water leaks flooded my bedroom floor twice among numerous other problems and shoddy workmanship) but what really bothered me was the lack of care and concern the management had for the safety of their tenants.

During the time in which we lived at our apartment (which was on the bottom floor below the level of the parking lot and very poorly lit) my locked car was stolen from the parking lot and several of our neighboring apartments were broken into by a serial rapist.

On one occasion, the male roommate scared the attacker off as he was breaking into his female roommate's room. Again, another apartment was broken into however; the female tenant's brother was spending the weekend with her and physically fought the attacker off.
Both times, I was arriving home late from school and found out what had happened from the police and the neighbors.

Then, our apartment was broken into and my roommate, who was home alone, was attacked. She was unable to see, turn on lights, or use the cordless phones because before breaking in, the rapist had been able to walk around the side of our building (which was right next to the office), open the unlocked electrical boxes, read the apartment numbers written on the inside and switch off our electricity.
The police that showed up on the scene told us that the rapist had been casing apartments in the area by hiding in the densely wooded creek behind our complex and watching the inside of the apartments. By doing this, he was able to memorize the apartment layout, furniture placement, and who came and went from the apartment. The police officers said they had informed the management, but somehow the management had not informed any of their tenants.

A week after the incident - my roommate and I had decided that we would not stay at that apartment anymore so we went to go talk to management and get out of our lease (which only had one more month left).
After we explained the situation to the woman in charge of the property, she blatantly lied to our faces and said she had not heard of such a thing happening (even though she had been informed by the police at least three times and it was on the local news the previous night and both my parents from out of town had called to warn us). She then basically told my roommate she was lying and even if the electricity was cut off, she still would have been able to use her phone. She also told me I was lying about the unlocked electrical boxes and had a maintenance man check them out, only to find it was true and each of the switches were labeled with the apartment numbers.
The woman then tried to tell us that these things happen and digressed into some story about a traumatic event she experienced when she was 16 and was cut with a knife. "But this didn't mean that we would be able to terminate our lease early."
My roommate left the office crying and I proceeded to cuss the manager out and threatened to sue.
At this point, she finally gave in and let us move out one month early with no additional fees - However, we did not get our deposit back.

I am absolutely disgusted with that place and the people who run it. I could not believe the management would be so cruel and disrespectful to the people who are paying to live in their complex. I would never live there again and I would not recommend anyone to live there.

info:
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/10076842/
h
