Resident 2009 - 2011

4/28/2011

The good: -the apartment itself is not bad. Ours had wood laminate floors, pretty big closets, and a nice big patio. -the location is great. you can walk to restaurants, grocery, gym, park... nice neighborhood, and easy to get on 35. -Maintenance usually responded promptly and tried their best to fix everything. when we first moved in there was a maintenance man named Fred who was really nice and did a great job, but he has since left, and the new guys aren't as good. -relatively quiet, although some parties do get a bit loud. -Nice little pool, usually clean. lots of parking. convenient laundry rooms. The bad: -Watch out for theft. My boyfriend's bike was stolen twice. once from our 2nd floor balcony!! And we heard about other people's bikes getting stolen all the time form bike racks, patios, balconys, and even locked cars. When we went to report the stolen bike form our balcony to the management so they could warn others about the possibility, all they said was that we should have been more careful, and that they couldn't warn the other tenants because it could give somebody ideas. -not gated, which I guess is one of the main reasons there's so much theft, but it also means there's always people going around door to door trying to sell you stuff/asking for money, which can pretty annoying. -My main problem: rude management. The people in the office seem to change all the time, but they do have one thing that's consistent, and that's that they're all pretty rude. Especially the manager. The girls that were there when we first moved in were nice, but who knows where they went. The manager is very unhelpful, and always tries to blame stuff on you, rather than take responsibility for their mistakes. They also have a serious communication problem. they say one thing, then change their mind, and act like it was you that understood wrong. Ex. We were told we had a month left to decide if we were going to move out, only to then be told we actually only had less than a week to decide. - You can hear everything your upstair neighbor does/says. walls are pretty thick but the floors/ceilings are not. - around the time school ends and a lot of people move out, the dumpsters become a giant heap of trash and furniture. It is a huge stinky mess. and there are always people going through the trash making a big mess. Because the dumpsters are overflowing, people leave their bags wherever they can, and when sacvengers rip the bags open looking for stuff, the big stinky mess just gets bigger and stinkier. We called to complain, but of course were met with a rude response, and by the time management does something about it, it's really bad. The poor maintenace guys have to try to clean it up, and I really feel sorry for them. -no lights in bedroom or living room. Bizarre. -They shut the water off a lot. and in the winter we were without hot water for a few days. -We have been trying to get a new screen door for the past year because ours came off and the track is messed up. we're still waiting. -And Finally, rent is going up. Without any updates to the property or anything else. Overall, our experience at Oak Park has not been bad, but rapidly declining service due to bad management, coupled with higher rents, make the bad outweigh the good. We are moving out when our lease is up!
