Resident 2003 - 2004

3/13/2005

My roommate and I lived at Chandler's Mill for almost two years. There were a lot of good qualities, but also a lot of negatives that we didn't dicover until after we moved in.

We lived in a 2/2 on the top floor that was really spacious. There was tons of storage space and a nice view of a grassy courtyard. The rent when we moved in was high for an apartment in Corpus, but somewhat reasonable for the space we got - at first. When we went to renew our lease (not because we loved living there, but more because we didn't want the hassle of moving), we got a nice surprise. The rent was raised almost substantially. Ridiculous!!

Then, when our second lease ran out, we needed a place for only a couple of months before moving out of Corpus, and decided to pay rent on a mont-to-month basis. When we did that, our rent went up another $100. So, basically we were paying close to $200 more per month when we moved out than when we moved in. Rip-off!! We could have rented a house for the amount of money we ended up paying.

Now to the safety, or lack thereof. First, the gate was always broken. I don't even know why they bothered to "fix" it. Second, we thought the gate was there to keep the criminals and vandals out. Instead, it seemed to keep them in! My car was broken into once, and my roommate's truck was broken into successfully 3 times, and attempted one other time. All management did was send out a pointless letter of warning. A lot of good that did. On more than one occasion, my roommate would go to her truck in the morning, and find that our neighbors (mostly students) had put the tailgate down and used it to sit on - or do other things on. It was really annoying.

To the apartment itself: The walls seemed really thin, and I could hear everything that all the neighbors did - and I was on the top floor. The drawers in the kitchen were unbelievable small and the stove was really old. Our dishwasher was a disaster and the staff was extremely rude and anything but helpful.

One night I did a load of dishes in the dishwasher. The cycle had finished and I went to bed. Well, apparently the dishwasher was broken and leaked a ton of water everywhere. It leaked into the apartment below us and soaked our carpet. When I called the front office staff to request that someone come fix the dishwasher and clean the mildewing carpets, the woman I talked to blamed me for the problem and refused to send anyone to clean the carpets. It was horrible. The apartment smelled like mildew for months, and no one ever came to clean them.

The staff was really nice when we signed the lease and everytime we handed over a bloated rent check. But the first time we needed maintenance and assistance, they were rude, lazy, and accusatory. Oh, and very pleasant to deal with!

The gym was ok. It's really small, but when we lived there, very few people used it. There are only a few machines and the stairmaster never worked for two years. Oh, and the bicycle seat, which I told staff about several times, was never fixed.

The black bottom pool is definitely the best feature of the complex, if you can get past the noisy kids who don't live there but sneak past the "security" gate to use it.

The most ------ person that lived near us was actually an employee of the complex - the painter. He would sit out in front of his apartment every weekend (and often during the weeknights) and blast his tejano music while cooking out (with his grill way too close to the building). He would leave broken beer bottles and other trash in the grass. An elderly woman lived across from him and would have to clean up his mess.

Parking was decent when they weren't blocking off half of the spots with tree trimmings that they hadn't hauled away. It takes a week for them to fix a simple pothole in the driveways, which are common and large.

We lived in a building with a couple of large families. With the water bill being divided up, I know we ended up paying far more for water than we should have. The complex divides it up among the residents. Not a great system.

All in all, the best things about living here were the pool and the spacious apartment. It's expensive, the staff sucked, the neighbors were noisy - especially on the weekends, and it's not the safest place in the world. Then again, it is in Corpus.
