Resident 2002 - 2004

8/21/2005

I grew up around a lot of crime and chaos, so compared to that, Denton North was a paradise. Suburbanite kids will see it a different way.

There are some complaints. When I first moved in, I told management there was a problem with the water heater. It was gigantic, yet I only had a few short minutes for a hot shower. Also, my electric bills were extremely high...hundreds of dollars! Each and every time I told them about it, they looked at their records and told me it was replaced not too awfully long before I moved in. They sent someone to look at it when I showed them my bills, but they could find no obvious fault (what fault can you find with a water heater just by looking at it???). Sure enough, the water heater burst while I was out of town one weekend. It was a huge mess, believe me. One of my neighbors said they saw water running out of my apartment on Friday night...I didn't find it until Sunday, and nothing had been done about it. Eventually they replaced the water heater and my electric bills became somewhat reasonable, but there was another problem:

My air conditioner never worked properly. It obviously leaked refrigerant. While they would fill it, thankfully, it would leak out again and the AC would never shut off -- not even at night. Never would they replace the unit. Again, this is a problem I told them about when I moved in (and repeatedly after that) but was never fixed.

The bathroom always had leaks and one of the walls started falling apart. Behind the wasted sheetrock you could see black mold. For whatever reason it did not affect my health, and since I knew they never fixed it I never bothered telling them. Across town I had a girlfriend I stayed with a lot, and when I wasn't there, I spent the night in my studio.

Additionally, my upstairs neighbor had two plumbing problems (one was another water heater, and one of the other reviews on here might be hers by the looks of it) that leaked into my apartment. Sometimes these things just happen, but three floods in less than two years? You don't want to deal with it.

It's typical for management companies to spend as little as possible on maintenance. You see this everywhere to varying degrees. Don't blame the leasing people or the maintenance guys -- they're not given the tools to do the job well. Blame management's overlords, if you can ever find them.

So, this place isn't recommended. Another thing to consider is that it's far away from everything, yet you have none of the advantages typically associated with living in the country. There's nothing within walking distance except for the Texaco. No mass transit to speak of. No neighborhood bars or restaurants. Parking is on the street for a lot of people. Dumpsters seem miles away.

If everything you own is waterproof and you don't mind having to use a car for every single thing, Denton North's not terribly bad.
