Resident ā€¢ 2005 - 2006

9/9/2006

We lived here for 13 months before we got a home, and have a few good and bad things to say about it.

Bad:
Staff - we told them 30-days ahead that we were going to move out 4 days after our lease expired. the day our lease expired they assigned someone else our garage spot and gave him a key and garage door opener (they hadn't received ours yet!). we were using that garage for storage while we slowly moved items into our house. the guy started storing his stuff in our garage while our stuff was there. it was promptly fixed, but what if he had stolen all our stuff??? everything we owned was in there in boxes and they gave someone else the key. at that point we decided we were glad to move out. things had irritated us here and there for 13 months and that just sealed the deal.
Parking - poorly planned, not enforced. We lived in the back and had a garage. People often parked either in our driveway or in the street just past our driveway. We were late to work 3 times because we had to wait for someone to move the car. Staff reaction: "There is nothing we can do..."There is nothing we can do..."There is nothing we can do..."We can give them a warning..."We don't want to upset our new residents since they don't know the rules..."(the rules were in the lease they signed! and we were not paying an arm and a leg to have some park right behind our garage all night and day!!!)"We can paint NO PARKING on the curb..."(but not enforce it!)"We have a number for the tow truck..."(but the manager has to be contacted and approve the towing)
Messaging Service - call after hours and you get an answering service. They don't always give the office your messages.
Noise - the ceilings/floors do not insulate against sound. We were on the 3rd floor, but heard others complain about sound in other units. We could always hear when our neighbors were in their kitchen.
Staff - turnover is pretty high and no one can give you a straight answer when it comes to complaints.
Trash - one medium sized (rarely compacted) bin outside of the gates. No trash pickup or convenient drop-sites. Trash pickup is once a week and the trash bin in front overflows over the weekend. Smelly, unsightly, unsanitary. We had to use a trash bin to hold our garbage Sun-Fri so we could wheel it out on Sat. Most people hold a bag out the window or set it on their hood/trunk to carry it out in the mornings.
Fitness Center - small, crowded, equipment was broken for 3 months of the year we were there.
Cable - You can get AT&T Home Entertainment's 30-channel cable package, but it uses the satellite signal and goes out in a storm. Takes about 24 hours to reset. Phone and internet are AT&T, too. You have no choice.
Security - the gates do not do any good. People will tailgate you in. They wait for someone to open the gate and follow you in. Mostly lazy residents who don't carry their gate-opener key-fob. Often visitors who can't get the call-box to work.
Residents - Apartment people are apatment people. Many are nice, but many are young and don't care about other people. They will turn up their stereo, they will yell, they will double-park, they will leave trash sitting outside their door for days. You get them everywhere, it seems.
Price - it is pretty expensive for a garage (over $75/month per spot). We had the 2/2 and 2 garages and paid $1295/month. It was a hefty price and there were no perks.

Good (and some Bad):
Size - we had the 2 bedroom, 2 bath with the W/D in the kitchen (kind of weird) but we got a big kitchen. Not much cabinet space or counter space (7 1/2 cabinets, 6 1/2 drawers, 3 small counter spaces) but there was a computer table which helped expand our kitchen area. The 10 foot ceilings were nice. The living room was a bit cramped, but our furniture is oversized. Nice size closets and rooms.
Maintenance - fairly prompt, the main guy is really helpful.
View - we had a 3rd floor, golf course view and loved it. We faced West, so the afternoons were HOT (the windows are noise-reducing, not heat-reducing as they will tell you). Our energy bills were $160/month in the summer, and $90/month in the winter.
Pool - the pool is nice, so is the hot tub. Too many people let their kids use the hot tub, though. And the sprinklers come on at night - not a fun feeling when you are relaxing inthe hot tub.
Mail - there was mail-theft when we first moved in, but the gates were fixed and locks were added. I don't recommend putting outgoing mail in their boxes. And when you move, don't trust the postal-person to forward your mail. Put a note in the box to remind him/her, ours was not forwarded for 35 days.
Location - I worked very close by, so it was only a 5-10 minute drive for me. The highway is close, but getting back from I-35W is not easy. You take a back road around Braum's and Denny's, which is hard to use sometimes (potholes and big trucks). N Beach at I-820 has horrible traffic during rush hour, so going East is not easy. Going North, West, or South is much easier.
Shopping - Lots of restaurants in the area.
Gate - The call-box is cool, but breaks a lot. You can see who is calling on one of the channels.
