Resident ā€¢ 2009

11/29/2009

I have lived at The Lanesborough for 4.5 years. I spent most of this time on the 7675 side, but the crime problem is the same on both sides. It's only a matter of time before your car and/or apartment get broken into. My car was broken into a few weeks ago. It was parked in the well lighted garage. I have seen people steal a minivan. I have seen many cars with broken windows. I have seen cars on blocks after their wheels were stolen. I have heard of apartment breakins, and finally my next door neighbor's apartment was broken into on a Friday evening around 8:00 while I was home. Cars burglary: There is no hope for improvement of security. The gates don't keep anyone out. It's very easy to follow someone in. The 2 security guards who are only there during the day have way too many buildings and parking lots to watch. I can think of only 2 solutions to this problem... 1) Install surveillance cameras in the main parking lots and at the entrance gates (Richdale does not want to spend money on that), and 2) rent a single car garage. Apartment burglary: I don't know if second or third floor apartments get broken into, but there is a weak spot in all of the first floor apartments. The back door/patio door has glass panels with a wooden frame. This wooden frame can be easily pushed in. The burglar then can walk through the opening even with the door dead bolted and the intrusion alarm armed. The opening is big enough to carry almost anything out. I called the corporate office (Richdale) and explained this problem. I explained that the doors should either have bars installed over the glass panels or the doors should be replaced with stronger doors. I was told that bars can not be placed because it is a fire hazard, and there are too many first floor units so it's too expensive to replace the doors. Nothing will be done. The best solution is to not live in a ground floor unit. Unfortunately, I do, so I put up my own bars over the glass panels of the door. In addition, the door can be opened easily by breaking one of the glass panels and reaching inside to unlock the turn dead bolt. I fixed this by removing the door knob and installing my own keyed dead bolt. This way I didn't have to drill any holes in the door. THIS PLACE IS STILL OKAY ONLY IF YOU'RE NOT ON THE FIRST FLOOR AND YOU RENT A GARAGE FOR PARKING. Staff: The on site manager is new and is very nice. The old manager was rude. Everyone is happy that he's gone. Noise is normal for an apartment complex.
