Failure to follow through when it really matters

We moved into this apartment complex exactly one year ago despite having heard bad reviews about the complex itself and the management staff. When I came in to inquire about leasing an apartment here everyone was very polite and very attentive, always returning phone calls and following up on all of my questions. We never really believed that the staff was as bad as some people had made them out to be on this website and others, and from people who had lived here previously. The landscaping was beautiful and the apartment itself was very nice. The only disturbances came from the residents of the apartment complex across the fence who too often would break the fence in order to come loiter in our complex. After multiple vehicle break-ins and a few apartments being broken into, we began to wonder why the management did very little to prevent such things from happening (i.e. paying for security). As many know, Hurricane Ike devastated much of our area this past week and many people are now struggling day to day. What I don't understand is the management team's lack of initiative to ensure their residents' well-being. Our apartment along with others in my building suffered serious water damage. It took the management team two days to make it to our apartment simply to take pictures of the damage, another day to send someone to wet-vac our carpet and we are still waiting for the shampoo and repair to the roof and ceiling, as I'm sure many of our neighbors are doing as well. One week after the hurricane, the fallen fence still lies exactly where it fell, which only leads to an even bigger decline in our security here. Roof shingles and broken limbs still litter the parking lot, and it seems as though the hole in our ceiling has been completely forgotten as we have yet to hear from any of the staff. Finally I understand people's frustration with the staff here, and as the end of our lease nears there is no doubt in our minds that this is not a good place to live. The staff is only friendly until you sign your name on that lease and from that point on fails to acknowledge your existence in every situation. Anytime we've had to approach someone in the office with any sort of question it seems as though it's the biggest bother to them to have to assist in any way. I understand that right now is a difficult time for many, and I realize that finding someone to come do the repairs may be taking some time. What I still fail to grasp is the understanding of why no one in the staff has made any effort to contact us with any sort of reassurance that they are working diligently to ensure our well-being, and to reassure us that we have not been forgotten. I do not recommend this complex to anyone who feels they deserve to be respected and not taken for granted.
