Resident ā€¢ 2011

6/25/2011

I consider myself a responsible renter: I pay my rent on time, leave a place nicer than I found it, and always ALWAYS read reviews of a place before I view it. Except for this last time. I saw the pretty pictures on the website, heard the great deal on my adorable apartment and went for it. It appears the old saying about "things that appear to be too good are usually so" is most definitly the case in regard to the Shores. Had I searched reviews, I would have run the other way. Of the 380 reviews on this site, well over half are negative. Let me tell you, cautious potential tenant, about my 3 months here: On my move in day (scheduled and confirmed over a month in advance), I walked in to the office to pick up my key. I was told it would be a few minutes. After 15, I asked how much longer, as my U-hual was blocking the road. I was told by a very impatient employee "Ma'am, you are going to have to wait. Check back in in another half hour, we are busy helping potential tenants." Despite my shock, I still managed to politely but firmly remind this employee that as a CURRENT tenant I will be needing help now. I was grudgingly given my key. Upon entering my apartment, I found several things that should have been handled prior to my move in date: the inside of the fridge stank and the ice and vegetable bins were full of stagnant water, and the carpet had not been touched since I viewed the place 2 months before. Dead insects and several foot long stains covered the floor. Upon urging from my family with me, I phoned the office. No one picked up, a pattern I have observed over and over since moving in. I called a few more times, unsuccessfully, that day and never heard any return to my messages. I cleaned the fridge out myself. A few days later two things happened: my AC went out and I still hadnt heard back about the filthy carpet. It was sweltering hot, so I tried calling the office over and over and no one picked up. I left a message. Shortly after, my boyfriend arrived as we had planned for him to stay over that night since my place was much closer to his work. It was impossible to be in there more that 5 minutes, so I tried calling once more and went to stay at his place. I checked back in everyday and continued calling over the next FIVE DAYS, only to find it still hadnt been fixed and was unlivable in the 95 heat. On day 6 of staying with my boyfriend and day 6 of no air, I tried calling 3-5 times in a row before an irritated woman picked up the phone. I told her of the situation, and reminded her about the carpet. She told me the repairman was on his way and the carpet would be cleaned in the next 2 days. The maintenance man arrived minutes later. He was incredibly friendly, by far the nicest person ive interacted with to-date. He told me a part needed ordered and wouldnt be in for 3 days. I was frustrated but understanding and made arrangments to stay with my boyfriend another 3 days. If your keeping count, id only been able to stay in my new apartment 3 days in a two week period. I returned 3 days later to an airconditioned apartment....and a still filthy, stained bug covered carpet. I called a few times before someone answered, as usual, and while thanking them for fixing my air, reminded them that they promised the carpet would be cleaned. I asked to speak to a manager. I was told they were unavailable and was instead put on with someone else. After hearing my story, she responded with "Well werent the stains there when you VIEWED the apartment?" I was floored. I dont care if there was a dead BODY on the floor when I viewed the apartment, if you told me it wouldnt be there when I moved in then it shouldnt be. I expressed that sentiment, nicely, to her and she told me she'd schedule a cleaning and call me back. The week ended with no returned call. I had now been in this apartment two and a half weeks. After the few day grace period, I called back. I asked to speak to a manager and was told they were unavailable. I very firmly rehashed the entire situation yet again, letting her know this was now the 4th time id had to call about something that should have been handled before I moved in. She apologized (a first), gave me her name(another first) and personally assured me the carpet would be washed and swept that week. Two days later it was done. I am not sure if it was completed because id finally found a caring employee or because I threatened to call the property management company. This was about a month ago that this was all resolved. In that time ive noticed several disturbing patterns of conduct at this complex: never answering phones, inconsistancy, dirty, ill-kept pools and ground. When we had all those tornados, the courtyard had several fallen trees in it. Weeks later, they still were there. The online rent payment I was assured they had before I signed my lease (I travel around alot) it turns out in fact hasnt been set up yet, leading to me scrambling to get back into town to cut them a check on time because I do not pay rent late. The "free garage parking" is also a source of concern, as the gates work off and on and ive more than once at night seen shady individuals milling around in there. And now, last week, I came home to find my power and AC turning off and on. I placed several calls, including leaving messages with the emergency maintenence system, and a week later have not had a call returned. I had to go out and buy fans just to make it semi livable. I lived that way for 5 days. My AC appears to be back working as of yesterday, but my power is still turning on and off every 10 minutes. I tried calling yesterday and again today....still nothing. I cannot take much more of this.
