Resident 2010 - 2014

If I could give zero stars I would. Save yourself frustration, anger, and the feeling of powerlessness and find another apartment. The worst office group I've ever worked with in my 20 years of renting. Explanation: We've lived at Somerset for over four years. The first few years were pretty uneventful and it wasn't until new management took over that I really became unhappy. I understand there will always be certain inconveniences that go along with renting instead of owning: loud music, dogs barking, pervasive cooking smells, etc. However, I have a difficult time understanding a management group that is dishonest, inconsiderate, and unwilling to accept responsibility for their mistakes; especially when it's at the expense of their tenants. We decided to find a new place to live after what we felt was a substantial increase in our rent - keeping in mind that there has been no significant upkeep/maintenance within our apartment for the entire four years we've lived at Somerset. My problem with management: 1. I went to the leasing office to find out when our lease expired and when we were free to move. I was given a specific date (written on the termination form) and told to bring it back the next day to solidify that date. 2. While I was in the office, I paid my utilities with a check. 3. I dropped off the termination form the next day. 4. I drove to the new apartment to pay the deposit and set our new lease dates - based off the date I was told by Somerset. 5. The following week I was called by Somerset to say they'd received my termination but that the move-out date was wrong. I asked how it could be wrong when that's what I was told by their office. The woman I spoke with said she didn't know what I was talking about and that by her calculation we would need to stay another 8 days to meet our lease agreement. 6. Again, I stated I didn't understand when I specifically came to the office to ask for a move-out date. When I told her I'd paid the new place's deposit based on that date, she didn't seem to care. In fact, I had the unpleasant experience of feeling she thought I was lying - that I was fabricating the whole conversation I had with the other staff member. 7. So, because I'm bound by a lease, I have no choice but to extend my move-out date and pay for the rent of two apartments for two full weeks. 8. There was absolutely no acknowledgement that what I was told by their staff member was incorrect. 9. Although very frustrating, this is not the end. 10. About a week later, I get a notice on my door that I haven't paid my utilities. See #2 above. I had PAID my utilities the day I stopped by for a move-out date and the termination form. 11. Again, the same woman I spoke to earlier who acted like I was lying, treated me exactly the same way. This time, however, I had proof - the copy of my check. When I brought it back to the office, she still seemed unwilling to acknowledge that they had lost my check. She kept saying, "I didn't lose your check." The sheer lack of accountability astonishes me. 12. I had to go to the bank, stop payment on the check, take a copy of the fee to the office, and actually had to demand they pay for the fee. Why should I even have to ask they pay for the fee - shouldn't they have gone out of their way to say they were sorry about losing my check in the first place and that I had to go out of MY way to correct the issue? The entire time this woman made me feel like the whole thing was my fault and that I somehow shouldn't be upset. 13. I wish that was the end of the story, but I came home from being out of town and found another notice on my door saying I owe them money. For what?? 14. I stopped by the office this morning to ask. My greeting was, "I knew you were going to come in and ask about that." What a greeting. 15. I was told that because of when I gave my notice (that I didn't do it within a certain time frame - late by those same 8 days), that I now have to pay according to a month-to-month rate. 16. Is it the money? No. It's the principle. It's the fact that every time I worked with someone in the Somerset management office, I've either been told incorrect information or treated like I'm stupid and unreasonable; yet, there's never once been acknowledgement of their mistakes or their behavior.
