I lived in the SATX Windridge Community for two years. At first, it was nice enough, but problems started stacking. My A/C died several times, and although maintenance came out within the hour, they never really fixed it. My bathroom sink pipes also corroded, nails were falling out of the buildings sides, the wood was rotting, there were ant colonies in the walls and floors and ceiling, and the door/floor didn't have a working seal. In the freeze of Jan '07, everything iced over, including the stairs up to my apartment, and maintenance didn't salt or anything. Despite all this, my rent had increased by almost $200 by the time I left, and the only community improvement was resurfacing of the parking lots. Also, as a side annoyance, there was no protected entrance/exit onto Wurzbach, which could make getting out in rush hour an incredible (and sometimes dangerous) pain. My main problem is with maintenance and AIMCO properties (which owns the Windridge complex). I paid my rent on time and had a good reputation with the office. I paid for two extra days on my lease, $40. The day of moving out, we were in a hurry and disorganized, and so when I went to check out at the office, I made sure to ask them if I was forgetting anything. They said no and wished me well. The next day was the third of the month (last day to pay rent without it being late), I realized the $40 wasn't paid, and I was already in Oklahoma. I called the office, got their voicemail, and I left a message asking what I should do. I did not pay online as the system said it would not be counted until the 4th, when rent would be late. I didn't get a call the next day, and I forgot (due to moving across country). I called on the 5th, but the manager wasn't in- they took my name and number and told me she'd get back to me- she didn't. The next day, the 6th, I called the office back and talked to the manager. I explained the situation, and proceeded to have the manager be extremely rude to me when I asked not to pay the $80 late fee on my $40 bill. She told me I should have dropped a check off on Sunday, even though I was already in Oklahoma. She then told me I should have paid online- when I mentioned that it said the payment wouldn't go through until the 4th, she replied, "well, we would have KNOWN you'd tried to pay on time." When I explained I'd left a message with the office on the 3rd, she actually told me, "that's not good enough." I mentioned that I'd gone into the office and asked them if I had anything left to do for checkout, and they said no- but "that's not our responsibility anymore." I had to sit through ten minutes of her berating me and repeating herself, with my only words being the occasional, "right" and "but" and "still..." Eventually, when she stopped, she very rudely said, "is that good enough for you, do you finally understand?" I finally said, "I don't want to pay a $80 fee on a $40 bill," and she hung up on me. A few days later, I emailed AIMCO a letter outlining what had happened. I did not once mention not wanting to pay the late fee- I was complaining about the rudeness of one of their managers, and that they may not want that kind of representation for their company. I got a one line reply back: "You must pay a late fee if your payment is late." AIMCO completely ignored my entire email. In the final bill I received, they didn't charge me for the late fee. Go figure. The only plusses about this community was the atmosphere (very woody and not medical-center feel), my friendly neighbors, friendly office staff (non-managerial), and the friendly maintenance staff. We're moving back to San Antonio in a month, and I am completely avoiding this community. I would not recommend ANY AIMCO property to anyone.
