Resident 2009 - 2013

9/24/2014

This is an unbiased review from someone who lived at Salado Apartments for over four years and in two different apartments. Living there was as good an experience as one could ever hope for an older complex clearly operating on a shoestring budget. I liked that management kept the place up and they had covered parking which is hard to find. I picked this complex for one reason. I had two dogs, one medium and one large. They claimed to be big dog friendly and a lot and I mean A LOT of apartments are big dog biased. Salado was true to their word and welcomed us and our dogs. However, your neighbors might have a problem with you. Our dogs were extremely well-behaved and rarely barked. However, our downstairs neighbor had a Mother Hen complex having lived there many years. She decided it was her mission to get us and our dogs evicted, confiscated or removed. She worked day and night to make life HELL for us. She had/has a little yappy dog of her own but I guess she felt entitled. Her daughter and grandson came by frequently and gave us extremely dirty looks, shouted at us when we took our dogs downstairs to urinate (as is their right) and acted like their rights mattered more than ours. She warned other people about our dogs and had convinced a few that we lived with dogs that would attack people at any moment. One woman saw us coming down our stairs and asked us to give her time to walk her dog past us before we came any further. This was a woman who had previously let her children pet our dogs. They hounded the office staff and called Animal Control the week Cujo aired on AMC because they feared our dogs hadn't been properly innoculated from rabies (even though that's the rule to lease there.) Luckily the staff were on our side. We had a pipe under the kitchen sink leak twice. I think it shouldn't have happened a second time. Also the A/C unit began leaking onto a ceiling panel above the shower. A slight stain began to appear but I didn't realize the severity of the issue until rather suddenly. I had to call after hours for maintenance. He acted annoyed as though I should have called sooner. How was I to know when it would become a problem? That is the sort of thing that should have been checked while the apartment was vacant. One thing did annoy me toward the end of our stay. They had the city take away the dumpster nearest our building. Walking potentially messy trash all the way downstairs, around the building and through a darkened parking lot to the dumpster at the corner of the property told me they were pinching pennies. Cross your fingers it doesn't pour rain on you or freeze you to death walking back and forth. No thanks! Apartment living is what it is and isn't as ideal as having a house of your own obviously. Would I rent here again? If I had to, YES.The location is good, the staff are decent, maintenance are nice enough, the grounds are pretty. But money must be a problem. The apartments need updating and the neighbors need to get off their high horse and get a life.
