Resident 2010 - 2011

2/26/2011

I'll cut to the chase: If you have noisy roommates or neighbors, you're screwed. The walls here are paper-thin, and if there is a sound pollution policy, there is no way to enforce it. Girls will have to deal with shrieking, giggly females having guests over until midnight (1:30 on Fridays!), and guys will have to deal with video games or their roommates' shrieking, giggly girlfriends (I can say this; I'm female). You're probably thinking, "Well, why don't you just talk to your roommates about it?" Most people who have had female roommates can tell you that whatever you say to a college-aged girl about noise level will be forgotten within three minutes. And those who don't know what I'm talking about are probably part of the problem. Also, their policy on cleaning checks is crap. While they're usually mostly fair, there is NO flexibility for people who cannot meet appointed deadlines due to family emergency - you can call the supervisor if you like, but they don't usually pick up. What's more, they will charge you $15 for requiring a re-check. Dayum, I wish I could make $5 per minute judging busy college students' housekeeping skills. If you're not there while the check is being conducted, you can fail on something like, "did not properly wipe baseboards" and be charged. (If you fail the re-check, you will be charged...it's never happened to me, but I think around $40 per hour it takes the help to clean - which should logically be about 10 minutes in most cases, but anything is possible! (If this is exaggerated, it is only slightly so.)) Fifteen dollars for not wiping the **** baseboards. This is a pet issue with me, since family crises and school craziness resulting from family crises' taking time from my schoolwork this year have made it ridiculously difficult for me to both be a student AND work around the scheduled cleaning checks. Do the Centennial management know that most of their tenants' first priorities are academic, and not domestic? I'm not advocating slovenliness, but gads. Another awesome thing that has happened 3-4 times this year is the power going out for no apparent, weather-related reason. It's just magic. And when the power comes back on, half the outlets still won't work, so...yay. I don't have a laptop, myself, but my roommates say that the wireless isn't consistent, either. Also, there's not a lot of space. Also, the apartment is poorly insulated. I always have cold feet and always have to wear my jacket inside. The ceilings in the bathroom are moldy. (Guess who gets blamed for this during cleaning checks, in spite of the fact that this place is 30 years old?) If your toilet overflows over the weekend, that's too d*** bad. The workman will not come until Monday. There is no light in the living room. I'm not kidding. NO LIGHT IN THE LIVING ROOM. There's a light SWITCH in the living room, but it turns on a light in the kitchen. Psych! Sometimes a closed door will swing open when someone else in the apartment closes a door too hard or a really big breeze comes through. Even if you live on the end. You basically have no closet space. And if you don't want to bunk your beds, you won't be able to close your door at night, because these rooms just ain't big enough. The laundry costs too much. And by that, I mean that it's going rate, but given how shoddy the apartment is, we shouldn't have to pay that much for clean clothes, as well. A trip to the laundry room sets me back $4 - $3 if I want to air-dry my clothes in the space I don't have. The parking lot floods all the time. I could keep going, but I don't want to beat the dead horse. Enter at your own risk. Footnote: I have no idea why Centennial gets so many good reviews, but they're probably from loud people who don't have noise problems. If you're social and nothing else, this place might not be so bad, I guess.
