Resident ā€¢ 2010

3/2/2010

My 3 person family has been here 2 years. We were VERY happy here UNTIL they CUT all the beautiful MATURE TREES (45 y.o. healthy cherries) and thriving roses and shrubs, which are rare in this neighborhood, and provided much relief from heat indoors and out. The landscaping company really took them for a ride. That said--up to that point I found the landscaping exceptionally well chosen and lush and I am a gardener. We really enjoy the courtyard which was grassy until they cut the trees, but kids love mud, so still good. The interior is fine, we have carpeting and new kitchen cabinets and counter tops but a very small stacked laundry unit. Currently maintenance seems very inexperienced, responds quickly, but isn't up to the challenge. We asked for paint to touch up 3 times and never got it, asked again and didn't get matching paint. Our unit is an end unit and very bright and cheery, big windows, love that. The windows have aluminum frames which my neighbor said is very conductive so heaat and cold come and go like there is nothing there at all. Re: the trees. If we were physically challenged we might have more issues with the parking, but we usually, almost always, get the spot right at our back door. There is plenty of street parking. We have a friendly give and take with management. If you like chemicals they are ON TOP of the pest control, except for ants, which I assume are bionic from years of spraying. Nothing stops them. Keep on top of your own ants as soon as you see them. I have NEVER seen rodents. We have carpeting, and newly vacated homes are having that taken up and parque floors are underneath which they have refinished, but I have noticed big gaps of space now between those people's floors and their doors. Maintenance. Also when our previous neighbors had carpeting, we never heard anything. Now that sound insulation is gone, but the walls are thick. We don't really hear voices. We do get cigarette smoke form our neighbors, YUCK! Price: Far too expensive, with regular increases. It must have cost them a mint to cut those trees (they cut around 50 of them), and power bills are high. This summer there was a very thorough theft of all bikes left unlocked, over 3 months I don't think anyone contacted the police, except one woman. Our car has been rifled, but we left it unlocked. Dumb us. Times are hard, keep an eye on your stuff and use locks. Overall, a tidy community--with the usual few/rare exceptions--friendly, helpful neighbors, a nice mix of cultures, and as safe as it gets in Alexandria's west end. The buldings' exteriors are being maintained fairly well, as well as anywhere. Negotiate your head-off for a better price, I think our two bedroom started at $1100. The current rates are simply crazy.
