Resident 2008 - 2010

4/9/2010

I've lived in Dominion Plaza for over a year. I'd say it's a great place to live if you don't need the frills. This is a working class building with a small population of yuppies, and it's very diverse. Here is a review of some of the things you wouldn't know just by taking an apartment tour: Top Three Best Things 1. The management, from the building head to the maintenance folks, are great. They know your name. They're salt of the earth type people. Things get fixed quick! They're very responsive. And they care. Love, love, love the manager and her staff. 2. No big rent increases. Unlike Charles E. Smith properties and many others around town (can anyone say monopoly), Dominion Plaza, which is run by Virginia Management Co., wants you to move in and stay. They've had residents who've lived in the building since the 60s. Their business model runs on long-term residency, not flipping units. The company is actually human. 3. Parking. Boy o boy is the parking situation great. I won't list the rules publicly, but it is very easy for friends to visit without going through much trouble. Even during the big snows, I was always able to find a spot. Top Three Worst Things: 1. Prepare for STIFLING HEAT and NO AIR CONDITIONING in the spring. The building runs on a convector and so you must wait for them to turn the heat or A/C on. They're good about turning on the heat when the time comes, but they're HORRIBLE when it comes to turning on the A/C. There is NO rule about when the A/C goes on that management communicates to residents. In other buildings around town, they often flip to A/C once the temperature goes over 75 degrees three days in a row. At Dominion Plaza, they turn the A/C on when they can't stand the residents complaining anymore. Expect no air conditioning until MID to LATE MAY, even if the weather is in the 90s as it was this past week. 2. One too many rules. Because the building is run so well (aside from the AC situation), management gets a bit over zealous with the rules on occassion. Ex: I don't believe you get your own key to the bike room. You have to sign for a key and return it to the front desk to get your bike out every time. 3. You can't go on the roof except for a couple months a year and it's only one person at a time. Why? Because one year some kids threw rocks off of the roof and ruined it for all others. This is the the sort of over-reaction that results in the occassional over management. Because there's not much outdoor space on the property, especially in the cooler months, it would be great if management would revise this rule and allow adults to go on the roof and bring their friends. If the building were to spruce up the roof, it could be a major asset and draw.
