Resident 2011

4/14/2011

My partner and I lived at Auburn Place apartments for 2 years. In fact, we just moved out last month. We have had nothing but a nightmare while living at Auburn Place and even afterwards. I've read all the reviews on here pertaining to the water bill, and they are absolutely correct. We are two guys, who travel extensively and our water bill averaged $140. After much investigation with The Breeden Company, which owns this complex...the Regional Property Manager, Corporate Maintenance Director and several other came to our apartment to do a walk thru. They found leaking conditions in all sinks, toilets, and the bathtubs. The water damage from years of leaking was so bad they ordered a new toilet, bathtub, cabinets and linoleum. One of the cabinets had wood that had literally turned to liquid when you would run your finger across it. The water bill amount never changed. Our apartment was plagued with a foul must/urine odor and infested with mold. Finally, towards the end of our lease we hired a private company for $710 to come in and investigate the mold. The study concluded the apartment was infested with growing black mold as well as airborne spores. When our dryer stopped working, they sent a company who services the units out to inspect. He said the exhaust lines (which are to be cleaned every 4 months) were so clogged. He used a special machine to clean it out, and it left more than a hefty bag of lent after the cleaning. He said maintenance is more than aware that they need to clean those lines, and we are very lucky it did not cause a fire. On two occasional we came home to find water spilling through the bathroom ceiling from upstairs and the floor and outside carpet was saturated with water. Both times we called Emergency Maintenance, when they came out they said there was nothing they could do until the morning and that technically this is not considered an emergency. In result, it ruined the new linoleum in the bathroom and destroyed the ceiling. When they came out later that week, they realized the mess and replaced the ceiling. We have gone without air conditioning for almost a week when are unit went out. We have paid $300 heating bills because the heaters don't work, and the windows are so old and incorrectly installed that they allow tremendous drafts to pass through the apartment. This last winter, our master bedroom got as low as 52F with emergency heat running. We placed a thermostat in the bedroom and showed maintenance, they said there was nothing they could do and to continue running emergency heat. The Apartment Manager told us to "NAIL" comforters over our windows. As conditions got worse, the apartment manager finally got fed up with us and told us, "if the apartment is that bad we should just give her notice to move out and go buy a house." After reporting this to corporate, she was fired. With so many more issues, and health problems related to the mold. We finally did put our notice in. Just 2 days ago we get a bill which was sent to the Auburn Place apartment, and forwarded to us in our new apartment in Washington DC. They want to charge us for new carpet, kitchen linoleum, bathroom linoleum, and to repair old wall patches. They said the carpet was stained with pet urine. We have a trained, very potty trained therapy dog who has never had an accident. Yet they want to charge us for new carper which I can guarantee is water and mold in the carpet. Linoleum ruined by pipe bursting from the upstairs apartment is also being billed to us. Old patch jobs which you can tell were there long before we moved in, also want to be charged to us. We spoke to the new apartment manager who was VERY insulting and VERY condescending. He stated, "I've been in the business a long time, and this is how we do it, and this is how it will be done...what will you be paying us today?" He stated they sent the bill to their apartment which we no longer occupy because they had no other address on file. I told him that not only do they have two phone numbers (which they've always had) but we were required to supply our new address on the "Notice To Vacate" form. He said there is no address on the form, yet sitting in front of me is a copy of that form which they made a copy of on THEIR COPY MACHINE! I asked him if he was calling me a liar, and he stated "I don't know what I'm calling you but, I'm not blind and there is no GOD DAMN address on the form I'm looking at." I called the regional property manager in the corporate office and have left 3 messages, I have also emailed her. I have heard nothing back. This afternoon we hired and attorney in Virginia Beach who will be handling this matter for us.
