The exterior of the building is beautiful: brick with ivy, the location is great, and I like my unit. Hardwood floors, moldings and a lot of character. I asked for a one-year lease when I moved in, but I was only given a 6-month lease. At the end of the lease, my rent was raised right away, and I just received a notice for another increase. In the one year I've been here, my rent has increased $160/month, which is why I plan to move out. The notice said that the rent increase is in line with market value, but a quick check on Craigslist shows many studios and even one-bedrooms in the area with similar-sized units and character, but at a cheaper cost.

Another problem is that the building is U-shaped and all of the units on the inside of the U face the courtyard, which is where the front door is. It can very noisy at night, because you can hear people coming in and out of the building, and in the summer when the windows are open, you can hear tenants in their units very easily.

The water is shut off about once a month because of pipe issues, and I've had to call maintenance twice in the past few months because of clogged pipes/drains.

The interior of the building is very dark and dank and there is usually a rank smell in the hallway of my floor. The garbage area in the basement can get really disgusting, and it's right next to the laundry room and back door, so you walk past it quite often.

I love my unit, which is big and spacious, the location of the building, and the manager is very helpful. He holds deliveries and packages for you if you aren't at home to receive it, which is really great. But the continuous rent increases are too much and I'll be moving out.
