Be mindful of where you stay as a college student

To be fair, this is a college town and most college students won't really know what there getting into as it's their first time (maybe) getting a place on their own. I won't say it's the worst place (that's the reserve down the street) but I won't say that they are to the standard of an apartment place away from the college. I will list a clear pro and con list based on personal situations for the judgement of the individual reading, in no way am I meaning to ruin any reputation as I feel it's ones own actions that do that, so saying that, here is my own view. Keep in mind this place has one of the lowest review percentage of the area nearly. Pro: Good for single people with no pets, easy to move into and fantastic access to the university, I never had to drive if I did not want to, that and I loved the access to the trail for my physical fitness. The place is falling apart and the oldest around town but Dwayne (SP?) did come by and fix stuff most all the time first day I mentioned it. Really has nothing to do with the management there that the place is falling apart, its old, that is what happens. Pay your rent on time, keep quiet, and this place can be a cheap place to live for the student that is on a budget. Cons: (I am being fair on this assessment despite other views held about me) The management has very unclear policy on several things which makes me question their subject matter intelligence on doing their job. I never have received a clear or any answer on what exactly this pet fee does as I am moving out now (or have moved out) and its coming time to actually tally up fees to the security deposit, never once has the pet fee come up. The only response I have is "Well I will have to check with the owner on that", frankly I know I am not the first pet owner and I have to be harsh and say know your job or don't be in this line of work. So if you have a pet know this place really is not pet friendly if you have anything more then an ankle biter. I had a 38 pound dog and he continually came up as a problem. We were known for having a loud dog but honestly, every dog barks out there, including our infamous neighbor that had a dog for several weeks that she was "watching". So really I have to say this place is not pet friendly, at all. No clear answer on pet fee (which should logically cover pet damages) is a big downer for me that I am discovering other more legitimate apartment establishments have clear answers for. Now moving onto the actual living experience, this place used to be trashier since previous management was here but since Tammy and Dwayne moved in they have done their best to clean it up; however, I am listing living experience under "Con" for this reason: I don't know how many times I had to leave my apartment to tell other people to stop talking so loud at 1am in the morning, so maybe this place is still collecting bad tenants. Every other week I was getting a notice for something so I started calling it "door trash", despite pest management always coming over they seem unable to keep the local spider and roach population at bay which since we stayed at the second story level is bit of a concern. The moving out experience is my biggest con when it comes to this place, moving out should be as simple as "hey I am moving out on "X" date and will have it cleaned and done by that point", it should be however there have been several mistakes that I would caution others on to be aware of. The issues started with them telling us a lease was signed for our apartment well before the sixty day mark when we were not sure where we were moving which I am not entirely sure if you can legally do that or not but alas it happened which was problem number one. Problem two began when we moved out, I made the mistake of not leaving electricity on there so when we moved out and came back to clean it we were stuck not having many options to clean. We did the best we could and the carpet was not clean at all, will be very honest and say that it needed a professional cleaner (covered on the check out list) badly. They were not there and I did not have a cord to run from another apartment so I decided to take a hit on the security deposit knowing I might not get half or any of it from the way this carpet was and the fact furniture had rubbed against the walls in such a way that it now needed touch up paint. I left a message saying were the keys were apologizing for the carpet and saying I understand full well this might sacrifice my deposit however I can't do much more about it. Generally speaking the place is too small to mess up too badly and unless I left a hole in the wall (which I did not) the security deposit should have covered it. This problem blew up from bad to oh my gosh in one weekend. I get a call from my boss saying my landlord is ticked at me. I call them asking why go after my boss (ROTC) ruining my name over a carpet and some cosmetic damage. "Well when things are this bad we have no choice but to contact your boss", after many words were exchanged and many times of them hanging up on me and straight yelling/cussing at me I hung up and refused to deal with this anymore. They went to my boss a second time and I was told by him that they where threatening to call a sheriff on me if I did not come over to clean this place. I called back and told them I would be up there in a hour having to skip out on going to work as they demanded to have it done that day even after saying I wanted to come up there on a Friday to fix everything. After many continued words when we got there and my wife crying over it we went up there to clean. They had gone up there and left trash of there own up there which we had to clean and by now there faulty fridge had leaked and caused mildew. After a initial charge of 300 over my security deposit went down to 180 flat within the deposit I am left to question their integrity in this situation, they refused to let us see the list, call the owner over there pure lack of professionalism in this situation and now the issue of charges came up. There lack of ability to give a clear number on two issues, one the carpet getting cleaned and two the repainting of the apartment. Carpets getting cleaned was listed on the check list for 50 (still is I believe) however they said it might cost more, and they wanted to (and still do as this is a open issue) charge me for labor for painting the place. This makes me question what exactly there job is, clearly it is not getting the places ready for other tenants if there trying to charge me a unclear amount for getting this solved. There lack of professionalism and saying clearly "they do not get paid enough to clean apartments" makes me think that they are simply doing this to be lazy. Every other apartment manager that I have explained this situation to has laughed and given me advice on how to handle this further. The slander told to my place of work was bad enough to have me consult with a slander lawyer (by the way this is not slander as they said my wife's review was slander, being next to a university they should be smarter I would think) over this matter. There lack of ability to come up with clear numbers makes me question their ability to do there job. My recommendation if anyone else has this issue, know where your small claims court is, because it seems like they are fudging the numbers on my side. My name is Alan Rhodes and I stand by my words. I have stated my personal view and experience I wish anyone reading to be aware of what you are getting into with these unprofessional people.
