So the outside of these apartments seem nice enough. There are a lot of trees, and the gardeners come and do a decent job often enough. There are a lot of apartments with trash or general crap on their patios, but it's not too big of a deal. There is a pretty big problem with people cleaning up after their pets. If you can tolerate the smell of dog ---- wafting by every couple of minutes, and watch where you walk, this is tolerable. The real problem comes when you actually move in. When they showed us our own unit prior to the lease signing, there was no power. You could barely see anything, so it seemed okay. When we actually got our utilities on and started moving in, the problems began. Apparently, MEB contracts out another company to prepare empty apartments for new tenants. For my apartment, they came and put down a new carpet, and that was it. There was a HUGE list of problems left over, which I will go through in a second. BUT, the part that is even more irritating is the office staff's reaction when you come to them with these problems. The first one or two, they're still nice enough. After the third or fourth day of not having your problems taken care of, they start to treat you like an annoyance. I understand they have one woman basically running the complex on her own, but their staffing problems are clearly not the residents faults, and the irritations of running a huge complex should not be shifted on to them. In my apartment, nothing was cleaned. I had to clean all of the cupboards and drawers myself because the person from the contracted company they sent back to my apartment did not go through the list I made. He came in, painted over the rust and the mold on the bathroom walls and ceiling, painted over the grease on the wall above the stove, and left. I had to start unpacking, so I cleaned almost every surface in the apartment. The kitchen cupboards still had old appliances in them, even one with rotting food on it that reeked. There was salt and spices spilled in a lot of the kitchen cupboards, and dirt and hair in all the drawers. Our living room window was cracked, and our bedroom window was jammed shut. We also had no screens so I couldn't open the windows anyway because my cat would escape. It took them an entire week to get to our windows and screens. And even then they put some old bent up screens on our windows that pop out very easily. The worst, however, are the bathroom drawers. One has makeup or SOMETHING spilled all over it. It soaked into the top layers of the drawer and started molding. The rest of the drawers have hair painted into them. I was wondering why the hair wouldn't come out when I tried to clean it, and it was because there were cluster of hairs that are about 6 inches long, with half of them painted right in. Not to mention what appears to be pubic hairs painted in. I have been asking for new drawers since the 24th of March, and it is now the 30th. Every time I mention it in the office, they act like they thought it was already taken care of, then offer to come by and fix it, and never show up. I still have not been able to unpack my bathroom things, and I think short of pulling the drawers out and leaving them on their desks, I probably never will. There were a huge amount of other things I found wrong, some were taken care of, some not. The maintenance staff does the bare minimum, most likely because the quality of the materials is so poor in the first place, it's all likely to break again soon anyway. On the plus side, most of the other people who live here are pretty nice and courteous. There are a few very annoying exceptions, as with every complex, but people will generally introduce themselves when you move in and tell you to let them know if they're being too noisy or a nuisance in any way. That aspect makes for a decent atmosphere. Also, the amount of space inside the apartments is the best I've found for the price. If MEB could boost their maintenance budget, and get the girl in the office some more help, the place wouldn't feel like a slum. Anyway, it's a tolerable place to live if you've run into financial troubles... As long as you don't mind cleaning your new apartment yourself. -------------------------------------------------- This place has changed hands again, and MEB is no longer in charge. Things are even worse now. Office staff has changed at least three times in the last two months. The new staff had my car towed last night, because it's not registered, even though it has a three day pass on it. What kind of management company has cars towed on a Saturday? In the middle of the night, no less? This one. They didn't give me a notice or anything. They weren't that responsive when my air conditioner was broken for two weeks, or when the neighbors let their dog roam the complex unattended for months. And they certainly haven't done a damn thing about the downstairs neighbor who has, amazingly, five children in her two bedroom apartment, and locks them outside all day. They come up to my and my neighbor's porch and take things like lighters or ashtrays. But the management doesn't care about that. We went about three weeks with no porch or parking lot lights last month, which was awful. You couldn't see the stairs or the creepy ----s wandering around the complex. And there have been plenty more of those around lately. Go a little farther south and find cheaper apartments. At least there if the management tries to screw you over, you'll have a little more money to bail yourself out. ------------------ ANOTHER NEW UPDATE. A place called Riversrtone Residential bought this place and is now trying to charge us for cleaning the apartment. If you see the pictures I posted here, you will understand how absolutely ridiculous this is. I told them I have pictures of how GROSS the apartment was, and they said that if they aren't on 35MM film, they don't care, and refuse to hear anything else about the issue. The staff at Avalon Hills LOST half of our lease while we were still renting, and had my car towed because they lost the list of vehicles for my unit. So that was another $300 I had to waste to get my car out. Our air conditioner was broken almost the entire time we lived there, and by law that has to be working in AZ. They threw out our 48 hour notice, and any other written notice we gave them while we were there. SO if you do have to deal with them, make copies of everything, and have them sign it if you hand deliver it, or send it to the office by certified mail. They will stop at nothing to try to steal your money.
