Resident 2003

6/10/2003

The management are really friendly and helpful (and young). They are very responsive and things get done right away. They are very good about keeping the building clean and during the four months I lived there, the garage was never left open and none of the doors to the building was propped open. I´ve only ever seen one person walk aroung the parking lot/building suspiciously (I actually think he was trying to get into my car because my passenger side door handle was mysteriously very greasy the next day, Note: I parked in the outside parking lot, not inside). The location is really excellent for students. I walked home at 11pm every night and never had a problem. The prices are very good for the market in Berkeley. The cabinets and doors are pretty flimsy though (not the front door). Now for the bad stuff: The floors squeak like crazy. They´re carpeted with wood underneath (I think) and every room has spots that creak and squeak and wail like crazy. It is WAY louder to listen to the squeaks from the people upstairs though. The people above me weren´t too bad, but my neighbor lived below a woman who exercised daily and she was pretty tired of the noise. The floors are pretty thin too, so I could hear all the moans and groans of my upstairs neighbors at night (and in the morning from time to time, which is not a pleasant way to start your day if you ask me). Also, I could hear my neighbors when they spoke at a not-too-loud level. That is obviously my biggest and pretty much only gripe with the building. Oh, wait, the elevator is really loud (I swear the thing is steam-powered) and you can hear it throughout the building. Although most people don´t use it and it in general isn´t used too often. I´m pretty intolerant and I totally didn´t notice it/mind after just a few weeks. The laundry room is way cool. It´s on the roof in a cool room with wicker chairs and magazines that random tenants and management donate, and another set of chairs with a table. There are 6 washers and 6 dryers so there usually isn´t a problem getting a load in. Two days after I left (on June 3, 2003) they installed new washers and dryers and my previous roommate says they´re really good. Cellular phone reception is also really good in the building. Safeway, Andronicos, Longs Drugs, numerous and diverse restaurants, and dowtown Berkeley are only a few minutes away walking (literally, like all of that stuff is five minutes away). Also, BART is very close. I took it every day and if I walked briskly I could be waiting for my train in 7 or 8 minutes. If I walked leisurely it would take around 10 to 12 minutes. Oh, and it´s downhill to the BART, which is much easier during the morning rush for the train. One last thing, the closet for the bedroom is humongous. This is a great building, and if I was going to live close to campus again, I would definitely try to get a friend to sign up for a 1 bedroom in this place. Oh, and the pool IS clean when it is heated, which is 8 months out of the year. The rest of the time some leaves do accumulate but it never gets too bad. Seriously, when it´s warmed, the pool is awesome and very inviting.
