Resident 2009 - 2010

9/16/2011

I lived at Malibu Creek for a year and my time there wasn't too bad. There are positives and negatives I guess... The parking was decent, though my car was broken in to twice over the period of a year - granted, it was a Jeep and there was easy access. A zipper. Even in Calabasas there are break ins though, and my neighbor across the street at a house had her windows in her car smashed. I was on the street side of the building and didn't experience much noise. Near the end of my lease though, a young 18-year old who had just collected some money from being hit by a cab moved in. Not only did he have parties until 3 am, but he and his friends smoked weed and it seeped up into my apartment. I couldn't open my balcony door for fresh air anymore, and I even complained to the manager and nothing was ever resolved there. The grounds weren't as bad as people say and things were usually kept up well. There was a regular gardener and things were always in bloom and the grass was trimmed. Of course there was the array of quirky tenants - the lady with the two parrots who chain smoked on her balcony, the couple with too many dogs in their tiny apartment, etc - but no one really ever got in anyone's business too much. The property was in a nicer area, that's for sure. Far enough away from the apartments crowded with Pepperdine students and no where near anything that was ------. So it was pretty safe. Then again, my car was broken into twice. The design and layout of my studio loft worked to my advantage at the time because the loft was raised and there wasn't much room to walk around. I think the law is that, legally, you have to have 8 feet high ceilings in order to bill for those square feet of floor space... part of my loft was not at that height so they couldn't bill for it. More footage for less $. The property manager there definitely wasn't the traditional property manager, but she always got my repairs done on time and was personable. She wasn't professional as much as she was personable. That's something to keep in mind depending on what you like. What I WILL complain about... a LOT... is the Harrison Management company that runs this apartment and others. When I moved out, I knew I would not be getting back my $1200 deposit because the carpet would have to be replaced. That was fine. What I WAS angry about, was that - even after a walkthrough that showed no damage - I was charged $900 for a repainting of my 1100 square foot apartment. First of all, the apartment didn't NEED to be painted at all. It didn't even need to be touched up, in fact. I walked through with the manager before I moved out, and she said that she wanted to have the apartment repainted for aesthetic reasons because it was bland. Sure, why should I care. I'm leaving, not my problem right? WRONG. Secondly, who painted it?! Chagall? $900?!?! Seriously? Not okay. What really chapped my --- about THIS was that, I was never notified of these extra payments... not until I got a CALL from a collections agency 8 months after I'd moved out. They had all my current contact info and everything. Never got a call, until it was on my credit report. NOT cool. After this happened, I made NUMEROUS attempts to contact the management company. I called their cell phones, sent faxes, AND sent certified letters to the address provided to me. NOT. ONE. REPLY. I did this for about three months. So, not only did I not receive even a portion of my $1200 deposit back because of carpet replacement, but I was then charged $900 for a REPAINTING fee when there were no damages at all and I was never notified. I actually liked my time at the building and the location, but this is something that should definitely be known before going into business with these people.
