The more things change, the more things stay the same. This apartment is nothing more than a facade. They have attempted to do rennovations since coming under new management but, in the end, they are littls more than slumlords; intent on making the quickest dollar at the expense of the safety of their tenants and integrity of their word.
The managment company lures tentnts with promises of upgrades; hardwood floors, tiled kitchens, granite countertops, etc... But all the upgrades are are cosmetic band-aid fixes to larger problems that the ompany refuses to fix. The tile in the kitchen was laid on uneven pavement so there is a large hump in the middle of the floor. On the bright side we play games whereby i drop something on the ground and the kids place bets on which side of the kitchen the ball will roll towards. The "new" cabinets are half the size of those they replaces but, on the upside, they are clean and have shiny knobs. The knobs, however, are uneven and often get in the way of opening and closing other drawers. Fortunately the contractor failed to install all of the knobs so I can, at least, get some of the cabinets opened. You can only open one cabinet at a time because they are either crooked or too close together. The entire kitchen is on uneven ground, so anything placed on the counter rolls to the back; which is preferable to having them lean foward so everything rolls onto the floor I guess. The hardwood floor and tile are great, but they didn't cover the entire floors, so we get to see the nasty, unclean flooring that on top of which they were laid. It is comforting knowing that the only thing separating my feet from 30 years of filth is 1/4 inches of tile and faux wood. What is sad, however, is that these are the IMPROVEMENTS!!!
The biggest problems come after you sign the lease. The company has its own custom lease so, unless you are a real estate attorney, or can afford to pay one, just know that the contract is extremely one-sided. There are 3 pages teling you what they can do to you if you don't pay your rent or if you violate one of their rules. However, there is no clause in the contract stating what you can do to them or with them if they fail to uphold their end fo the contract. Therefore, after you sign the lease, all requests you make are met with indeifference and neglect. They make promises to get you to sign, but then don't feel it necessary to fulfill them once they have you locked in for a year, and there is nothing you can do. They not only neglect basic repairs, they neglect the most important things to the safety of their tenants.
We have been waiting 3 months for new locks and screens on our windows so prowlers can crawl in to our children's rooms. There are broken smoke detectors hanging from the ceiling. The heating unit is busted and, although a request was made 2 weeks ago and they are required to fix it in 24 hours, it still remains unfixed. Of course the bonding between me and my children has never been better as we huddle together at night for warmth. Our porch light is still broken, so we fumble for keys in the dark. There is mold on the blinds in the bathroom that we get to inhale and cough at. They said they were going to install new blinds but, nope. There are wires hanging low in the parking structure so, unless your car is not tall enough to get on most amusement park rides, you can't park in your assigned parking space. We didn't have hot water for 10 days after we moved in. We were given 4 used light bulbs to fit into the 12 fixtures throughout the house.
Of course all of this is only made better by the constant derision tenants face when dealing with the management company. We have had 4 managers in 3 months, and the newest incarnation is just one more in a long line of condescending people we have to deal with to get things done. The current manager blames problems with the apartment on the tenants, and then makes excuses for why they can't get stuff fixed. Apparently every general contractor in Los Angeles is fully employed since they can't seem to find someone who can fix a lock so my kids are safe. We were promised so many things and the management company has failed to deliver and we have no recourse. Of course if we failto deliver rent on time, they have plenty of things to do to us and they are certainly set on doing it.
There is absolutely no way I would encourage anyone to live at Keswick Court; not even my enemies or exes (I do have some standards of compassion)
