Resident 2008 - 2010

12/12/2010

Stuff I like: - Beautiful grounds in the spring and summer. Lots of ducks waddling around. - Close to 85. 85N (to 280) is a breeze, though it gets jammed with traffic on weekday mornings. 85S involves a couple long lights and occasionally De Anza students who get stranded in the middle of the intersection when the light changes. - Close to Target and Whole Foods. The Oaks has a coffee shop, a Jamba Juice, a Hobee's, a small theater with second-run movies, and some miscellaneous restaurants. - The staff is always courteous and very responsive. When I come in Sunday and ask for a fix, they have a guy in on Monday. - Love the high ceiling on the second floor units like mine. - Plentiful guest parking. Stuff I don't like: - The walls and floors might as well be made of plywood. I can feel the floor vibrate if I'm not careful with my steps, and I'm 135 lbs. My new downstairs neighbor said he thought I was doing jumping jacks. I can hear my next-door neighbors and their movies / video games every night. Fortunately, I never hear my neighbors when I'm in my bedroom. - Most people get only carport parking. I don't have one of the few garage spots, but they look pretty lame (looks like you open and close the door by hand; they're like sheds in the middle of the carport area). - Poor insulation. My second-floor unit quickly gets hotter than outside in the summer, and bleeds heat rapidly from the living room sliding door in the winter. Shutting the blinds isn't enough; you'll need to use the thermostat and the A/C. - The washer/dryer is a single unit (one door, one load at a time) with a condensation dryer. The condensation dryer has no tumble dry (since there's no tumbling at all) and will set wrinkles into your clothes if you're not quick. However, there are also coin-on laundry rooms nearby, though I've never used one. - Any visitors-- friends, family, the airport shuttle-- will inevitably get lost. I'm looking for a bigger place, but having a hard time finding a place that balances the characteristics I value as well as Glenbrook does. Overall, thumbs up.
