Resident 2005 - 2006

1/8/2008

My husband and I moved into Avalon @ Cedar Ridge in Daly City in August of 2005. When we first toured the facility, they showed us a great upstairs apartment that faced the afternoon sun, so the apartment was fresh and virtually free of mold. They promised us one of the INDOOR GARAGE parking spots if we signed a lease with them. We signed a 12 month lease for $1375/month - not including the garbage fee. We have a 2nd vehicle and at the time of signing, they said that a spot will become available within the next 2 weeks and they will assign the 2nd spot to us for a fee (which wasn't a problem for us...we just wanted the convenience of having the 2nd spot). Well, the spot never opened up because their employee took it. They kept egging us on month after month, "Check back with us next week" yadda yadda yadda. They moved us into a downstairs corner dark unit which instantly showed mold (within the first week of us moving in) because the carpets were SOAKING WET the day we moved in. We had to put towels down on the floor to bring in all of our stuff. Two weeks later, we complained about the mold. Someone came to 'look' at the mold and tried to scrape it off the wall. After that, mold was EVERYWHERE. Under the bed, on our shoes that were laying out in the open by the door. I mean EVERYWHERE, especially all over the window sills. So we went to the office and complained again. The staff on hand told us that the person who signed us up for our lease had coincidentally transferred and that's why we couldn't change apartments to an upstairs one or get our 2nd parking spot. The staff person isabel could hardly speak English. My husband and I could hardly understand her and between the two of us, we speak 3 foreign languages. She kept telling us that everyone always has mold - that it is unavoidable and she couldn't do anything for us, but we can leave our windows open. Hello dimwit, we live on the 1st floor!!!! We told her that that was not an option as we live on the 1st floor. Then she proceeded to tell us that there has NEVER BEEN ANY PROBLEMS on the property concerning safety. Then she reitterated that there is security ON THE PROPERTY starting at 6pm and they are patrolling the area constantly. Avalon at Cedar Ridge will seriously tell you anything you want to hear when you are about to sign the lease. They will sell their soul to the ----- to get you to sign that lease. They are truly experts at BSing. At this point in time, I was 7 months pregnant and realized that breathing mold is a major health hazard. We again brought it up to management. Unfortunately the only person on hand was isabel, and of course she was rude and told us to just leave our windows open. Fast forward to Halloween night 2005 - we left our window a CRACK open...I mean, you coudldn't even SEE that the window was open. We left it open due to the mold problems and needed to air out our room. We were gone for no more than 2 hrs. We came back, to find every single piece of electronic equipment was stolen. And we know WHO it was. AVALON @ CEDAR RIDGE tennants. So after finding that our apartment was ransacked, we looked for the "patrolling security" - which btw, we have NEVER seen prior to this situation. The Daly City PD arrived BEFORE the supposed on site rent-a-cop showed up...and when he finally showed up, he was HIGH, you can see it on his pathetic loser face and smell it on him too. He didn't even ask the police if he could get a copy of the report so that he can fill out his own incident report. Long story short, we wanted to break the lease - they told us we had to pay X amounts of months worth of rent. They offered us a 'safer' apartment upstairs, but they wanted to 'restart' our lease. I told them to kiss my butt. I hired a lawyer with a health hazard lawsuit. Avalon at Cedar Ridge let us go. I should have spit in Isabel's face. I hope that uneducated, rude, non English speaking wench got canned for being an idiot. I won't even mention the lack of "guest" parking (I use quotes because there is such a lack of tennant parking spaces that tennants park in the guest parking and the guests have nowhere to park...oh wait, yes they do - across Junipero Serra in the NEXT neighborhood!!!) I also won't mention the fact that the walls are so damn thin that you can hear the fools upstairs bumpin' uglies. There was no security on the premisis to call to pound on their door to quit blasting their stereo at 3am. I don't think there was ONE good thing about that apartment. I hope it get shut down just like the apartments on Skyline and Westborough from mold problems. Bottom line...it is NOT safe, in fact - I'd say it feels borderline 'projects' almost. They charge way too much rent to live in a mold infested place. They will tell you just about anything to get you to sign their lease. DON'T DO IT! Put the pen down and go up the block to the apartments located on Gellert and King. At least the old man who runs the place up there is honest.
