Resident 2007 - 2010

9/19/2010

Our van holds 5, maybe 6 passengers. It does not have a step to assist in boarding or a chair lift. There it sounds reasonable that persons with mobility issues can not use the van. When touring the property prospective residents were told that our van would provide transportation to and from medical appointments, and having a car was not necessary. The groves' van would take care of their needs from medical to weekly grocery shopping. There was never a mention that the future resident must be able to step up 2 feet into the van, or that only 6 people per day could ride the van, or that there would be limited scheduling of van. The groves have 321 apartments, 6 passengers represents less that 1 percent of tenants. With the van running 5 days a week for only 4 hours per day, the van services less that 5 percent of the residents. There are far more than 5 per cent of residents who would like to use the van for shopping needs, medical appointments and banking. However due to limited space, limited amount of time van is in use and the fact that a generous percent of out residents are not able to board the van, they are unable to use the van. This is just another misrepresentation of goods and services that were both orally stated and also show in the written material which is given to potential residents. The government in general has recognized the importance of seniors being able to reside in their abodes/homes for as long as possible. When moving into a senior property one would think that the management and owners would recognize the necessity to provide a van which they are able to board, auto door opens to the public spaces, seating when waiting for elevators....the answer is they do not and appear not to care. I also feel that all printed material published by The Groves At Dublin Ranch should be removed from our bulletin boards and from circulation, and reprinted. They should not advertise what they do not deliver. There is no concierge services at The Groves At Dublin Ranch senior building, activities are very limited and at one point management said seniors could no longer use the pool. The chair lift is unsafe in the hot tub area, the lights on the patio walkway are out for several days or months at a time and as I stated van service is limited. At best this is a senior apartment without services and even that is questionable. There are currently at least 6 residents who have children under 21 residing with them, and this contradicts what I was told when I moved in that the facility was for folks 55 and over only, and anyone else living with them had to be 21 or over.. There have been so many representations made to me to induce me to sign a lease. For example, I was told that storage would be free, and cages would be constructed so that each storage unit would be secure...as opposed to the current floor plan where anyone can walk into the storage area and steal another tenant's items. I was also told that in a short time parking paces would be assigned to each tenant but this never occurred. I was also told that rent increases would be tied to social security increases or decreases, so that it social security increased by 2%, my rent would increase by a like or lower amount, and if Social Security decreased or did not increase there would be no rent increase. I was told that there would be a fully equipped gym in the clubhouse with instructors, with a wide screen tv. The tv was stolen and never replaced, and the gym was moved to a small apartment location that is dreary, with no instructors. I was told that the building was very secure with locked gates and 24 hour TV monitoring. The TV monitoring never works, and very often garage doors are left open, subjecting us to theft or mugging. It frightens me. I was told at move in that there was a medical clinic and stores being established on the street level. This was a total lie as were most things that were told to me when I took the guided tour. I was told only small dogs were allowed up to 25 lbs, but there are a lot of larger dogs that people are falsely claiming are guide dogs. I was told that the building was only for people 55 and over, and more and more I see a lot of younger people living here including many teens. Many of the long time residents have become friendly with one another, and enjoy socializing with each other, however the management continues to make even this difficult, by removing patio furniture and club house furniture, not allowing a budget for events and limiting the hours of the event planner. Recently, thy added a few tables and chairs. My suggestion is to get a building manager and management company that specializes in senior living. A manager who is a senior. I also recommend that management provide a a monthly activity budget that is actually available to use on a monthly basis, plus a van which hold 12-15 people and runs 5 hours per day. The van should have a lift for wheel chairs or at the very least can be boarded with a built-in step and rail. The clubhouse is a public space open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 as well as the patio area adjacent to the club house. In case of an emergency/accident there is no public phone access or phone which is directly connected to 911. This would mean if a person/resident was to fall or collapse someone would have to return to their apartment or a neighboring apartment to call 911. This as already been a problem when last summer a guest of a resident jumped from the 3rd floor to the patio below. Fortunately there were both people on the patio which heard the thud, as well as a neighbor who witnessed the jump from her patio. In September 2010 a resident collapsed in the clubhouse when she was alone, and was unable to call for help There was no phone. Luckily another resident walked into the clubhouse 40 minutes after she collapsed, and called paramedics. She died 2 weeks later. I feel that with the population of our building being over 55 years of age that common sense would demand that there be public access to an emergency phone and 911 number. Must another person die before management acts or can the city of Dublin direct management to install emergency phones? On another issue I feel that automatic doors be installed before the end of the year. They are needed both to enter the main building as well as from the 1st floor and exiting to the patio. At the current time we have many residents who are in walkers or wheelchairs and they can not enter to public patio area without help. They are unable to open the door, hold a door and use walker/wheelchair.
