Resident ā€¢ 2005 - 2008

3/4/2008

A big problem that will be faced by any new resident, especially 1 bedroom renters, is the parking. There is currently zero control over parking with no spaces defined for tenants nor for visitors. Most every night you'll see cars double parked up against the outside of garage doors in every driveway on the premises. I often see people walking a couple hundred yards away from their parking space to their building. Something needs to be done, but the most the office has hinted at is ticketing or towing you if you park in front of your garage. So really, if there are no other spaces and they start doing that, expect to park... on the street far, far away I guess. That's really nothing compared to the violation that happened to me and my wife. We have never had a problem with maintenance really, even though they lie to us about things and usually don't fix things well. (There's also a problem with shoddy construction like the bathroom wall not being level so our shower door is unable to close and they had to rip open the wall behind our water heater because a pipe was put in incorrectly, but that's another story.) We've always allowed them to enter when we weren't home until one day last year, 2007, when we returned home to discover several things a little weird: 1) our 5-disc DVD changer in our living room was on a different disc slot than I left it on the night before; 2) our living room TV volume was down to 1 bar even though we had just watched a movie the night before; 3) the receiver was set to DVD even though I put it on tuner the night before; 4) far away from where they ever should have been, our bedroom nightstand light was turned on even though it was off when I left for work that morning. The bottom line is that the filthy prick who entered our home definitely went through our stuff and at the very least absolutely sat down on our couch and tried watching "something" on our DVD player. Needless to say we felt very violated and disgusted and scared to stay in our own home. We called district management and of course they didn't say we were lying but made it very clear they didn't believe their perfect maintenance staff wasn't capable of such a thing. The best they did for us was to change our front door lock and allow us to keep the only copy of the key. A few months later we noticed that filthy monster is never anywhere to be seen. I imagine it's because he was caught molesting someone else's home. Maybe he escaped back to Mexico. It's a very pricey place to live and they increased our rent with our second lease by $60, which is very unreasonable since the going rate is even now still $50 less than that. As far as noise goes, through the walls there isn't much of a problem unless an adjacent neighbor feels like pumping up the volume on their stereo system, which has happened a few times. The worst with noise is through any windows facing the courtyard when there are loud people out there or with their courtyard windows open. One night some neighbors across the courtyard kept us unable to sleep until 3am and we had to call the police to come shut them up. The police have been called on two other occasions that I'm aware of for the loud stereo problem I mentioned. We don't walk the grounds too much, but we've never experienced dog messes on a sidewalk or stairs more than on two occasions. Something that is an ENORMOUS problem and a significant part of why we needed to leave asap is there were repeated instances of ear-splitting, never-ending false fire alarms that would usually go off in the middle of the night and often multiple times n the same night, leaving you a zombie at work the next day. The false alarms would happen every few days and since they're usually in the middle of the night it would take nigh on a half hour for maintenance to drag their asses over to turn it off, and you'd have to sit freezing outside as you'd go deaf anywhere inside the building. Then just as you'd finally get back to sleep it would go off again. It started and continued to happen from time to time for nearly the entire last year we were there. The saving grace is the location. It's in northern Irvine surrounded by beautiful open spaces and very clean and safe *outside* the apartments. The Commons alone makes living anywhere in Woodbury worthwhile. We've lived solely in Irvine apartments for about 6 years and have never had a perfect experience anywhere. Doubt there is such a thing.
