Resident 2009 - 2011

9/11/2011

Met My Needs

I lived at Brent Manor Apartments for two years. My then boyfriend (now husband) was starting grad school at UCLA and we needed somewhere to live that was affordable and close to campus. They allowed the two of us to live in a studio apartment. He was able to take the Blue Bus to school and I used the one allotted parking spot for my car to get to work. Not all of the apartments come with parking spots, but we were lucky enough to get one. Pros: -The location is great. As I already mentioned, it's within bussing distance to UCLA. It's within walking distance of Brentwood. It is also a short drive to the Third Street Promenade and the Pier in Santa Monica where we would hang out on weekends. -The building is quiet and most of the residents seem to be other grad students (although there seemed to be a shift to the stoner crowd as we were leaving). -The neighborhood also felt very safe to me with the exception of the non-agressive bums in the alley. Cons: -There is no air conditioning. It doesn't get as hot here as in other parts of LA, but it does reach the upper 90s which is hot enough to be uncomfortable. The windows face perpendicular to the breeze, so we did the best we could to keep cool using fans. -The laundry room only has one washer and one dryer. This means it takes a long time to do your laundry if you have multiple loads, and there is no backup when the coin slot jams. -They only do full year leases and do not let you switch to month-to-month after your year is up. I understand that the landlady is trying to have the lease cycles coincide with the school year, but this is very inconvenient if you need somewhere to live for a couple months after graduation but before moving to start a new job. Also, you have to let them show your apartment almost every day for the last 30 days of your lease. Yes, it is an older building, but I had just graduated from college and was previously living in a co-op/former frat house, so it didn't bother me. Overall, I really enjoyed living here and it met my needs for this phase of my life.
