Resident 2010

10/29/2010

I deeply deeply regret moving into these apartments

I was charmed by the art deco architecture, unique fixtures and style, and the spaciousness of the studio apartments. But since the moment I moved into the Du Barry, it's been a bit of a nightmare. Let's first start with the parking. Absolutely. Impossible. You will get tickets and you will drive yourself insane trying to find a place to park. The managers told me I was "next on the list" for the garage but conveniently neglected to tell me that one bedroom apartments automatically get first priority on parking and there is not even enough parking for those apartments. Let's next talk about safety. I've been heckled by a group of men and accosted twice by two different drunk men while walking at night. About a week after moving in here, a fellow resident warned me to be very careful in the neighborhood because her friend was raped in the elevator when a man followed her into the building from the street. Next issue: cockroaches. The building has a major infestation and I find these disgusting critters crawling all over my kitchen constantly. Now, the noise. There is a constant stream of huge trucks on 5th street, servicing all the restaurants and bars on 6th St and Wilshire. To give you a sense of how loud it is, if I am talking on the phone, the noise of these trucks completely drown out the voice on the other end of the line. I also have to sleep with earplugs and I still get woken up, often at like 5 or 6 in the morning from trucks. What finally pushed me over the edge to write this review is the heating system. You can not regulate the heat in your own apartment and they crank it up really high. I feel like I'm living in the inferno apartment in the movie Synecdoche! It is about 82 degrees in my apartment, the old heaters dehydrate my skin and my hair, and I can't even function in my own apartment. In short, this place really sucks.
