Resident 2003 - 2007

7/18/2008

Apartments plain, nothing special. Carpet is really chintzy and thin. So are the walls. Heaven help you if you have a noisy neighbor! Pool is small, but I hear they recently renovated it. Laundry room was always filthy. No one ever cleaned out the lint from the dryer, and there was always hair and other crap in the washer. Also, it's a tiny laundry room with only 2 washers & 2 dryers, and often only one of them worked. Most apartments there have 2 or more people living there, so sometimes you have to do your laundry in the middle of the night if you want to use a machine. Assigned parking, which is a plus, but that's only if you are lucky enough to score a spot in the carport. Don't park in the carport by the alley, lots of break-ins. It's a problem if you have overnight guests with a car. No room for them to park on the property, and against the law to park on the street overnight without a special police permit. Location is the best thing about this place, it's way off the street and in a quiet, relatively safe neighborhood that's close to downtown Palo Alto, Menlo Park, the train station, and 101. Rent is too high for the last few years, though. For quite a few years it was very reasonable, now way too much. For that kind of money, I want my own laundry, a dishwasher, and a clean, quiet unit. Pipes & toilets in the building are very loud. Toilets dont always flush right. MOLD, tree pollen & DUST is another problem there - don't move there if you have allergies. I was miserable and congested all the time. Don't know why, but the owner seems to hire the WORST managers. There were 3 different ones when I was there. All very much into their own lives, don't care crap about you or any problems with your apartment. If you are even one day late with your rent, they will come down on you hard. Crummy place to live if you have kids, it's small, echo-ey and noisy, all cement. No grass, no play structures. Parks down the street, but you've got to take them there, too far for little ones to walk by them selves. Only place to play is in carport or alley, with too many cars. No pets, which is horrible because most others on that street allow pets, and its a great neighborhood to walk a dog, with a fantastic dog park down the street behind the gas-station on Willow. My advice: skip Menlo Park, too snooty and greedy, all landlords care about is money. Move further out and commute. Better to pay the extra money for gas and have a nice apartment, than to live close-in and be in a dingy, dusty little place.
