Resident 2002 - 2004

3/16/2004

there are actually two buildings here, side by side at 249 and 259 N Euclid, under the same ownership. my experience is with 249, but the conditions don´t differ much between the two. in short, this place is noisy, dirty, infested with drugs and disease (you can tell that just from the stench), and is owned and run by cheap, slimy, rotton people (Julio is the property manager, Ron and Ed are the owners). it´s horribly embarassing to have to advise your visitors to hold their breath as they walk thru the hallways.. it´s not rare to hear people literally gagging from the smell. as if that´s not enough, i am in the process of taking legal action against the managment for harassment, numerous attempts at retalitory eviction, discrimination, refusal to make repairs, and personal injury/distress, just for starters.

since you´re likely wondering how i back all of that up, here is a more in depth report: this old building was probably beautiful a long time ago. it is begging for a restoration, but the owners would rather keep painting over things instead of replacing them, hiding things like water damage, dry rotted wood, and other unhealthy conditions. since the rent is low for this area, a lot of the other tenants just try to tune out things like the strong urine odor in the hallways, the stairwell door that hasn´t had a doorknob since it broke off many months ago, and growing population of wild cats surrounding the building and filling the night with the sounds of their loud, shrieking territorial battles. maybe other people can deal with these issues, and with spending a large chunk of money every month on bug sprays and traps to an control the impossible roach problem, but not me. i tried to address these issues with first the property manager, then one of the owners, but that proved fruitless (the owner literally rolled his eyes and laughed at me, asking "this is your first apartment, isn´t it ?", as if i should "know better" than to expect basic habitibility, and was wasting his time and my breath). i ended up calling the health department, and they recognized the address right away. they´re apparently having just as tough a time as me in getting the owners to make repairs on this place. about privacy.. don´t expect much, if any, of that here. the property manager especially is known to discuss your personal business, no matter how personal, very loudly, and to absolutely anyone. he also plays favorites when it comes to letting a tenant move to a different apartment, or selling them a parking spot. in closing, if i feel a one star rating still gives this place more credit than it deserves.
