Resident 2010 - 2011

9/1/2011

Like all apartments the UVT has it's up and it's downs. However, my overall experience from the UVT has been a positive one. First and foremost the staff. There are members that are noticeably more knowledgeable about policies etc and are able to get things done when asked or when brought to his/her attention. I don't know if other people take the time to talk to the staff and find out who these people are but I would recommend it. The head of maintenance knows what he is doing and has fixed all of my issues in a timely manner. I have never had a problem last for more than 1-3 hours when I put a work order in. Almost always the issue is fixed within the same day it is presented and I am grateful for this. On a different note, the towers are very inconsistent with their floor plans relating to the actual apartments. Though you may see a floor plan on the UVT site, your apartment could look differently. This is only a minor annoyance and I think it would be best to include all floor plans. The rooms are of great quality and there is usually little wrong with them. The greatest benefit is the lack of bugs. I just finished a year with one of the most disgusting roommates. James Cameron probably got his ideas for Avatar's wildlife from what this person was cooking up in their cupboards and section of the fridge. Through all of that, I saw not one cockroach or ant and this is a huge feat when living in SOCAL. Some other apartments up the street have an enormous ant problem and I feel blessed to not have this. Live in an apartment where you wake up in the middle of the night and have ants crawling in your ears and over your body, then live in the Towers and you will know exactly what a relief it is. I've read comments of people complaining that the toilet clogs. Some advice, two flushes work just as great as one and take little extra time. Furthermore, you don't need a maintenance person coming into your room to plunge your toilet. Go to the store, buy a plunger and do it yourself, you shouldn't have to make anybody literally handle ----. The internet and laundry machines do occasionally have problems; however this is not the towers fault. But, I do wish the towers would handle internet and Laundry/facilities problems on your behalf instead of making one call the providers themselves and sort it out. The appliances are on the towers property and the check is made out to them every month not another company. If a towers staff member reads this, please consider that request. Furthermore, the no caps limit at the towers is probably its' largest selling point. I've lived there for a year, going on two and to be honest I and my roommates are heavy electric users and it is nice to not have to worry about a cap like other apartments put over peoples heads. As a student, your already worried about a million other things in life, why concern yourself with making sure you are spot on, and policing your roommates as well to make sure they don't end up making you pay extra. One flat rate every month is extremely easy and stress free. I never got a chance to use the pool, the movie theater is pretty fun to go with some friends and the gym is nice. The gym isn't fancy and at times it can be extremely full. But once again take some time to figure out when people go and when they don't. This will make your experience that much more enjoyable. If your looking for fancy equipment then go to the schools gym. Most of the people, if not all of them, living at the towers are UCR students, use the gym that you pay $50 a month for if this one is not up to snuff. The location of the UVT is perfect because it's nice to visit friends at the UV; while they have a farther walk/bike back, your apartment is right there. Many nights I've been at Denny's until 3/4am and have been grateful that I didn't have to walk back like my friends. If your really lazy the trolley stops right in front of the towers, you roll out of bed and onto it. Now my largest concern with the towers is the courtesy officer. He stands there at night and that's about as much as he visibly does. I don't know if the towers employed this person but if they do I would STRONGLY recommend letting this person go and hiring a new gaurd. There are numerous occasions where people, not residing in the towers, have caused trouble and harm on towers property and the guard is nowhere to be seen. I know Grand Marc has a patrol car that sits outside it's front gate and I advise UVT to do the same. This is not to say that the Towers is a dangerous place. It's no safer a location as Grand Marc and I actually feel safer living at the towers than I would there. Grand Marc has it's own fair share of ghost stories that would make people think twice. My point is that the UVT could take extra precaution in making sure events are minimized. With all of this said and though my intention was not to write an essay, I hope this helps and gives some useful balanced insight into the Towers. I'd be happy to write more if people ask but I'm not sure how I will be notified when responses are made. Take time to know the staff, you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. Remember your experience is what you make of it.
