Resident 2008 - 2009

9/8/2010

i lived here for one year and two months. the actual living areas were not that bad, but then again i moved here from the Tendernob, so anything was an upgrade. the walls were pretty thin, and i could hear my insomniac neighbor upstairs every single night around 4am watching Fox News. The decor leaves much to be desired. the wall color is disgusting, and the hallway carpeting looks like it was purchased from a bankrupt casino in Reno NV. The day we moved in our carpets were still wet from being steam cleaned and the maintenance man was still painting one of the bathrooms. He mentioned that he didn't get a chance to do half the things he needed to do since the management wanted the apartment occupied ASAP. great. Living there was actually decent. the neighbors are great and there were tons of friendly dogs around. It did get incredibly cold in the winters, and i could actually feel the wind coming through the windows on a regular basis. I once got locked out of my apartment when i was doing laundry while wearing my PJs and no shoes on. I called the maintenance man to help me out, but he said he couldn't get there for another couple of hours because he was at the bar down the street having a drink. it was my bad for getting locked out, but i waited 2 hours for him in the lobby barefoot...The only maintenance person who was awesome was the janitor. He is a hard worker and always took the time to stop and have a conversation. He would always hand out treats to the various dogs in the building and was overall the biggest redeeming factor of the building. My biggest problem was moving out. Anissa was the building manager at that time. she withheld my deposit on complete BS reasons. remember the work that the maintenance man didn't get to complete when i moved in? she charged me for it. she also charged me for replacing the carpet throughout the entire unit. San Francisco has this great law that states that a landlord MUST replace the carpeting every 5 years no matter what. if the carpeting has to be replaced within 5 years due to damage by a tenant, then the tenant has to pay for new carpeting minus the amount of years that the carpet was already there. She charged me for the full amount (about $1200) even though the carpet was not new when i moved in. There was some staining on the carpet when i moved out, and i was completely willing to pay the legal amount owed. it took us months to fight this. Anissa was never able to tell me how long the carpet was there, swore at me on the phone and hung up on me, so took took my fight up to Essex (the company that owns the property). Anissa lied and made up an arbitrary number of years that the carpet was there. i asked her for documentation of this, and she was unable to provide any saying that they only keep records for a few months. Who are you? Enron??? Anyway, after months of back and forth and threat of legal action i got a check for the full amount of my deposit in the mail. Win. Overall, i would not recommend renting here under the current shady management.
