Resident 2002

3/17/2002

I decided on the apartments because they are brand new and they had a very attractive promotion-- 2 months free on a 15 month lease. The apartment does come with some nice touches-- cable/data/phone ports on almost every wall, rounded corners on the walls, arched wall entries between rooms, new appliances, free alarm system monitoring, effective controlled entry, and nice management. The location is next to Japantown, which is nice for the local grocery store, restaurants, and shops. Also, the gym is top of the line and the meeting rooms in the leasing office are very nicely done.

The bad stuff... The apartment construction was rushed and is desperately behind schedule and over budget. This means that your apartment will definitely have some issues-- missing shelves, incorrect phone wiring, controlled access not working properly, etc. No big deal because the management is prompt and effective with these issues. The biggest issue, the noise between the apartments, is the worst I have ever experienced in an apartment.. and I have lived in some bad apartments while in college. I had to rely on the model to gauge the noise by judging the construction in the model because the apartments were still being built when I was searching. Of course the model seems to have some extra insulation or was built during the better times of the construction project, so I judged incorrectly. In my apartment, I can hear EVERY cabinet door open/close, EVERY footstep, EVERY door open, EVERY beat of their stereo, and can identify EVERY item that drops to the floor, when they run their appliances, and when they run a cord across the floor. It is very frustrating.. luckily they keep reasonable hours. Still, my plates rattle daily and I jump occassionally from the noises.

My suggestion, spend the extra money to move into the 2 or 3 bedrooms which are all upstairs-- about $350 more a month for the 2 bedroom and you only get 1 month free on 15 months-- if you like the apartments. This would be my recommendation to a friend.
