Bermuda Garden Apartments

This complex has turned from a safe, reasonably pleasant working-class apartment complex into a ------ hellhole in the space of about 18 months. San Leandro, and this area in particular, are considered less than desirable places to live, and so the management had trouble filling units, even at slightly below-market rents. The first two (live-in) managers in the three years I've lived here were fired for failing to fill units, but otherwise did a great job maintaining the place and keeping the riff-raff at bay. The bottom line prevailed, however, and a new manager was brought in, one who was already burdened with managing a similar complex two blocks away. She responded to the pressure by basically renting to anyone with a pulse, with predictable results. She rented some units to young women who then brought their boyfriends from Oakland and Richmond with them and it's been downhill ever since. She was not required to live here, by the way. She has since been fired, leaving her inexperienced assistant to fill in until another manager is hired. It's been over three months now. To make matters worse, Mercy Housing, the parent company, sent letters to all the residents explaining that there would soon be on-site management, thus letting the thugs and gangstas know that anything goes after office hours. So now, immediately after five o' clock on weekdays, the teeth-rattling bass starts up, along with plenty of shouting, arguing, swearing, weed-smoking and drinking, until the small hours of the morning. Even better, the complex is laid out with half the apartments surrounding a parking lot and the other half surrounding a courtyard, so all this activity is right outside one's front door, as apparently nobody wants to be cooped up inside while partying their brains out. Oh, and of course the maintenance has gone downhill as well. Maybe three of the six available washers are working at any given time (in a 75 unit complex) and one has to step over all kinds of trash and debris to get to them, not to mention the ever-present dreadlock and long t-shirt death-stare gauntlet. Absolute nightmare and I can't wait to get out of here as soon as I can scrape up the cash. Thanks for letting me vent.
