I moved in when it was really hard to find an apartment and moved out when it was easy to find apartments. It was full occupancy when I moved in but only about half-full when I moved out. I think that had more to do with the economy than anything else but it didn´t help that they kept switching managers. It seemed I would have to deal with a new (increasingly unresponsive and unfriendly) manager every time I had an issue pop up.
The rents came down but nobody volunteered this information. I started at about $2K/month when I moved in. I asked about the rent when I thought the market got soft and had to give notice in order to reduce my rent (to a slightly more reasonable $1,600).
My neighbors complained about the heat but it didn´t really bother me all that much. I paid about $10/month even during the crisis. I came from the Midwest, though, so 48 degree nights didn´t really bother me. The summer wasn´t that bad either because my apartment tended to be pretty cool.
Pete the superintendent left, which made a big difference. When he was there, everything was extremely clean. He was a genuinely nice and responsive guy. The perfect employee. Letting him go was a big mistake because the place was a mess after that. I never asked about it but my neighbor did and she was told not to ask again. Interesting way of handling the situation.
My biggest complaint was the parking. I had a big car and both cars next to me were big. In fact, one was a cargo van, which couldn´t even fit into the spot. Drove me crazy, I complained and asked to be moved for months. It took me backing into a car and then threatening to sue for them to make a change. Again, extremely unresponsive management.
Noise was apparently an issue for people. I could hear everything people said in the courtyard but didn´t have a problem with the neighbors. I lived on the top floor and my neighbors complained once or twice that they could hear me walking around. Considering the apartment was built in the 1940s, I thought it was generally well built and secure.
Never had any safety issues.
Overall, I would give a tepid recommendation.
