Be very wary of this place. They lie to you! I moved into a small 2-bedroom apartment 10 months ago with my wife and daughter. The price was a little high, but since it was a newly remodeled unit, we went for it. They only let us sign a 10 month lease, which set off some warning bells. I asked the representative who was giving us the tour if this is because they plan on raising the rent. She flat out told us not to expect it to go up more than $50 or so. Well, our lease came due and they wanted to raise our rent $500!!! That was if we signed a lease early. If we waited another month, it would have been $700 per month. Well, that's the same size as a mortgage payment on a $500,000 home, so we bought. To add insult to injury, we looked into renting month to month in case it took extra time to gain possession of our new home. They told us that it would cost us $6500 to rent our apartment for one month outside of a lease! In the end, we lived in a hotel, which cost a lot less than trying to pay for a month's rent. Yes, they have some good deals for new lessees and they give you a good tour, but it's meant to rope you in. There is no rent control in Marin and they take full advantage of it. Once you move in, they nickle and dime you for everything. You pay extra for your own parking spot, utility rates increase almost every month, you pay for a storage locker, and you pay to use the clubhouse. They were even hitting up residents to chip in money for an employee's baby shower. Unbelievable. Do yourself a favour, rent in one of the nearby complexes, which have the same amenities, but cost less or, like we did, buy a place. Stay away from the Highlands of Marin!
