The location two blocks north of the pier on Ocean Avenue is fantastic, but as a previous long term resident, it should be known this building is currently undersirable for many reasons. 1. The apartments are very small, all of them generally 500 square feet or less, and rent for $4,000 - $5,000 per month, or $10 per square foot, which is outragious and crazy. 2. The building is over 50 years old, built in 1964, and regularly suffers from water and sewage pipe bursts and relocations. Additionally, many complain about slow elevators. 3. The current management, Douglas Emmett, owner and manager of an enourmous number of properties in Santa Monica, are hostile and predatory. They illegally tried to evict a neighbor because he was paying low rent control rent, another who was displaced for eight months because repairs were not made, etc. But the underlying attitude of wanting to profit at the tenants expense is quite present here. Landlords have a lot of power over how much a tenant enjoys where they are living. The manager, Cheryl Garrido, expresses this attitude, in her own words, in a video recorded with her permission, at 4. Most all of the maintenance and parking staff are exceptionally nice people. In closing, I recommend people find larger units in areas like Brentwood and Marina del Rey, for closer to $5 per square foot. The prices I mentioned were current as of summer 2018. Goodl luck.
