Resident 2012

Take your hard-earned money elsewhere

Did your rent get increased by 50% in a matter of 2 years? Ever? Mine did. I lived at Citra for 2 years. While it's a great locality, with several restaurants and a Safeway right across the parking lot, there's a limit to what you can charge for a really old apartment, not matter how many renovations it has underwent. ** Lack of professionalism ** The management lacks professionalism. Period. The last thing you need after a long day at work is to have to haggle with them for petty maintenance issues. One time I had to remind them 3 times before they fixed my leaking bath-tub. I waited 1 month for a week I had to be away so that they could get enough time to fix the tub in peace, but lo and behold the place was a mess when I got back -- they hadn't put back everything. I referred a friend who ended up renting an apartment. As per the policy I was supposed to receive a referral bonus. I had to remind him not once, not twice, but more than 10 times, over a period 12 months, before they actually paid. They offered petty excuses every time, excuses that'd put a a teenage girl to shame. "Oh, it got lost in the mail" or "Oh, the boss's secretary lost it" or "Oh, it's a separate account". Mike makes you feel cheap every time you talk to him. It was as if I was asking for a favor. ** Rent ** In my case, they increased the rent by more than 50% in a matter of 2 years. And Mike, the manager, told me it was because "I could afford to, because my employer was doing good." How petty! Why should my employer's well-being translate to increase in the rent?!! It's not like they started managing the place better. Their philosophy is to keep increasing the rent until they can. The rent is riding on a bubble. You know abou the housing bubble, don't you? Truth be told, if you're paying as much as they charge you, you better expect peace of mind. That' can't happen as long as you live there. ** Management ** Mike, the manager, employs his relatives as substitutes for weekends. But the substitutes cannot make any decision over the weekend. So you have to stay late from work to be able to talk to Mike for anything important. The maintenance guys, David and Raymond, are fine though. ** Summary ** If you're bequeathed a large sum of money, or don't care about your money, go ahead and rent at Citra, but why don't you buy a place of your own with all that money? You can put your money to better use by renting elsewhere. I ended up renting a much better apartment (equidistant from work, equivalent facilities) at an equivalent rate. I couldn't be happier to move out.
