Resident 2020 - 2021

2/17/2021

My experience with the Crescent was one of the worst experiences of my life, required me to move out after only 2 months, and will now most likely require me have to retain an attorney pertaining to damages I experienced. The following occurred (all of which I have documented in videos or photos, or have witnesses that can attest to the problems): 1. In the first week I could not get into my own apartment and the front door of the building because of a faulty door opening systems (the doors to the apartments do not have keys). Over the course of the next 2 months, and failed repair attempts, there were more than 10 instances in which I could not get into my apartment or the building, which finally caused me to provide a notice to vacate, after reviewing with legal counsel that the Crescent, and Aimco, a publicly traded REIT that owns the building, were in violation of California law. The building manager responding by sending me an invoice for over $45,000 and Aimco claimed in a letter to me that they corrected the problems with the doors. I have photographs and videos documenting this was never fully fixed, along with my boyfriend being a witness . 2. Upon move in, there were the following problems: the washing machine did not work, the fireplace did not work, there was a lack of hot water, plumbing issues, pest issues (spiders in the unit and rodents running above unit), internal doors that did work, electrical outlets not working, and the elevator not working. A maintenance worker stated that the contractor did a poor job and that the building manager was reckless in signing off on the contractor's work. 3. Upon notifying Aimco's CEO Terry Considine and its General Counsel, Lisa Cohn, that I was concerned with people gathering without masks in the pool area, which is in violation of COVID-19 regulations in Los Angeles, the company's legal department responded as follows: "The Protocols dictate the signage that is required informing residents of current pool restrictions and safety guidelines. It does not require that the pool area be monitored for compliance." No one ever followed up with me on my original complaint, at the height of COVID-19 deaths in L.A. 4. After the washing machine was finally enabled, it started shaking the entire apartment upon first use (my boyfriend said it felt like there was an earthquake) and damaged bedding and apparel. There were subsequent maintenance requests, but the washing machine continued to shake the same way until I left, and I couldn't even use it the last month I lived there. Aimco claimed in a letter to me in February that this was repaired, which is categorically false. I have this on video. 5. The washing machine situation is so bad at the Crescent that washing machines in other apartments literally caused my apartment to tremble. I have videos that show this. 6. A major plumbing problem developed with the bathtub/shower that caused a significant amount of water to flood the apartment below me. I was told by maintenance to not use the shower/bathtub for several days. 7. There were safety issues: 1) multiple people were using the pool area without masks, and 2) management leaves the garage door open, which leads to non-residents entering the building, including homeless people that go through the garbage. The building manager freely admitted in a saved email that he does this. 8) There was paint left on the sliding doors. Some of this was remedied, but there was still some paint on one door when I moved out. Aimco denies this in their letter to me, but I have photographs showing the paint on the door. 9. The HVAC system wouldn't cool or heat the unit to the proper temperature. Aimco claims in their letter to me that this was corrected, but my boyfriend can testify that it was never fixed. 10. Maintenance did not properly keep the elevator clean. There was a dog that urinated in the elevator and it wasn't cleaned for more than a day, causing a stain. Management denies this, but I have photographs that document this. My boyfriend also witnessed the dog pee being on the elevator for nearly a day. Over the course of 2 months I had to call the emergency maintenance number or submit a maintenance request more than 20 times and when I moved out there were still issues with: 1) the door to my apartment/the front door to the building (this is on video) and not being able to get into my own home, 2) the washing machine shaking violently and damaging clothes, 3) the HVAC system not working properly, 4) paint still being on a sliding door, 5) COVID-19 violations by residents and guest gathering in the pool area, and 6) the garage door constantly being open (which management has admitted in a saved email, which poses a security risk to all residents). I couldn't even stay at the Crescent, in the final days, for fear that I would be locked out in an area with a high crime rate.
