Troubling violations of DC housing regulations and the lease agreement

Our troubling experience began when we reported a leak coming from the smoke detector on our ceiling in October 2022. We were informed that the issue predated our occupancy, and was told the issue could not be fixed without a contractor, and they the owner would not be hiring a contractor at that time. Instead, we were offered a trash can to contain the water leakage. The failure to effectively address this problem violated my rights to a safe and habitable living environment. In August 2023, we escalated the matter, citing concerns about suspected mold, only to be met with silence. Under DC housing law, a landlord is required to conduct a mold inspection within 7 days. No inspection was ever done. The leakage intensified following Storm Ophelia in September 2023, resulting in not just an unsettling symphony of dripping noises but also damage to some of my belongings. We furnished photos evidencing the damaged ceiling, yet Anthology remained unresponsive. It is highly disconcerting that our earnest pleas for an urgent and effective resolution were met with inaction. The negligence in addressing this critical issue undermines our confidence in Anthology’s commitment to tenants' welfare. After raising these issues with a demand letter, I was told by Simone Simmons that resolving the issue was contingent upon the hiring of contractors, a step Anthology was either unwilling or unable to take. With our lease nearing its end and after enduring numerous housing and lease violations, we were offered a unit transfer as the sole remedy. This offer was extended merely 10 days before the termination of our lease, when it should have been offered back in 2022. I am profoundly disappointed and feel betrayed by the lack of urgency, concern, and professionalism displayed by Anthology/Greystar.
