I have lived in the Highview for one and a half years and have very few complaints. I am sad that I have to leave it soon due to a job change.
It is true that they have converted what used to be a one bedroom apartment into the "two bedroom" I now share with my roommate. This means that we have a relatively tiny "living room" (it's a dining room and we know it!), but the bedrooms are huge! Beautiful floors, high ceilings lovely stone and wrought iron patio overlooking the Washington Monument. The bathroom and kitchen leave a bit to be desired, but I've certainly seen worse.
I think our rent is very reasonable. It is significantly lower than any other building we looked at. And the free utilities are certainly a plus.
I have rarely even heard noise from my neighbors, and certainly have never been bothered by it. I frequently forget that there are apartments above mine, because I never hear a peep. The common areas of the building are always immaculate (seriously, it's wierd) and there are ample washers and dryers in the basement.
The maintenance staff is extremely friendly and helpful (although the Russian guy is a little creepy- can't ever tell if he's being pervy, or just friendly). People in the management office will bring our packages into our apartment when we are unable to pick them up during regular hours.
Parking can be an issue if you get home after 9:00 or so... I've never had to park more than 2 blocks away, but it does seem a little dicier the farther away from the building you get. I know the neighborhood has its issues with crime, etc., and I agree with many who think it's not "gentrified" yet, but there is nothing wrong with a little diversity. I personally have never felt unsafe.
All in all, I like living here and am looking into a Bernstein Management-run apartment for my next move.
