Resident 2016 - 2017

6/30/2017

WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT RENT AN APARTMENT AT THE SAVOY. It is by far the worst apartment complex I've ever lived at. The apartment complex was built in the 1960s, and the inside definitely shows that. The interior is substandard with very old appliances (no dishwasher and microwave) and hideous parquet flooring. When I moved in, the AC unit was completely full of mold, and when I informed the building about it, the response was to use bleach...The building has all the smell that you would expect from an almost 60-year-old building. In addition, the floor that I lived on had one resident whose smell permeated from the apartment and to such a terrible extent that I actually called maintenance to make sure that the resident was not dead. I was staying in an apartment facing L street, and I honestly should have gotten out of my lease right then and there. The Savoy faces the firehouse and quite a busy one as exhibited by the constant sirens that wail every hour on the hour. Countless times I was woken up by a siren. High quality ear plugs might work but good luck if there's ever a fire and you need to hear the alarm. Also, the water in the building would change unexpectedly from cold to scalding hot. Not only is this is just plain annoying but I've had minor burns from showering. And the bathroom sink constantly leaked underneath and on top...The list of problems could go on and on, but I'll wrap this up with a quick overview of the staff here. The concierge and maintenance people were fine. They do their job, and they're polite. But it's the management that really gives the Savoy a bad name. They're so concentrated on making as much money as possible that they are unwilling to help out in any way that doesn't bring in a profit. The building has been consistently losing residents over the years, so now management is under pressure to rob the wallets of the remaining residents. I was moving to another state after I finished up school, so I asked management if I could vacate early and pay only the rent for the month or two that the apartment was not rerented. Management agreed. After I had paid for movers to move all my things into a storage unit, management informed me that they will not rerent my apartment and instead are waiting for the lease to expire. I was completely lied to. I even offered to help the management find a new tenant, but they refused. I moved out early to save some money but instead I spent over $1000 moving out and paying for storage and now am stuck still paying rent. I could have just saved that money and moved out later. Their reason for not helping me out: tenant occupancy is too low. Do yourself a favor and rent somewhere else like anywhere else. Maybe look at some apartment complexes on Pennsylvania Avenue which are comparable in price but offer so much more. This place is too expensive, too shabby, and too money grubbing for anyone to spend their money on. ?
