Resident 2006 - 2009

Great for students

We lived there for 3 yrs and loved it! Reading over the other reviews, I will say that the apartments towards the back have limited parking spots.. those in front can make use of the spots behind the swimming pool (in the banks parking lot). The rent was about 735 (increased by $40/yr) for a 2 br on the first floor. However, last year, they introduced separate heat and hot water billing. Though that reduced the rent further (to 715), there seems to be some problem in winter with the heating. We, including other neighbors, received astronomical bills of $150-180 per month. Some of us who complained were given 'refunds' but others were told it was their fault- for leaving windows open in winter! (HA!) The location is great for students and families. Major groceries about 6-10 mins away. Downtown Newark nearby. Shuttles to campus every 7 mins. Laundry is in the basement. Slightly pricey ($1.75 (washer) $1.5 (dryer)) all in quarters (u can get them from the bank!). Try to do laundry during the week as only 1 machine is shared between 11 apartments/ bldg! There are no dishwashers in any of the apartments. Dumpsters are at the end of each parking lot... so it is a hassle for some. But I've seen people put their trash on the back of their cars and reverse to the dumpster! lol They've changed the sublease policy now I think. If you want to sublease your apartment, you have to first get approved (they come and check your apartment). You're refunded your security deposit (less any deductions) - we got about 80% of ours back which I've heard from previous tenants is normal. Previously, if you subleased, you paid the old tenants the security deposit which ofcourse was a loss if they left the apartment with alot of damage. Management is good. Maintenance requests are fulfilled during the day .. or 2 unless it's an emergency. Hallways are vacuumed regularly. Last year, there were 1-2 break ins and car-thefts that I heard of. So keep your patio doors locked! If you have kids, beware. Some neighbors may complain at the sound of running or crying children! All in all, we had good neighbors, great playground (no slide though) and a good pool- so definitely recommend! I have seen other apartments in the area- the really good ones are ofcourse very expensive- which a student can't afford unless he's sharing. Some apartments charge for a 1 br what we paid for a 2br! Some are downright tacky and you couldn't pay me to live there!
