Resident 2008 - 2010

5/3/2010

My husband and I moved into Union Square Apartments back in March of 2008. We had an amazing experience upon move in- the specials were accurate and they waived the application fee. It was a painless process- exactly what we were looking for at the time. Our apartment was spotless upon move in, and we didn't have any trouble getting in and getting settled. The problems, however, began in the summer of 2008. After Tropical Storm Fay rolled through, some of the buildings sustained damage- our's in particular. Our storage unit next to the apartment was flooded and a number of our things were ruined- which isn't anyone's fault. It is South Florida, after all. However, after we dried out the unit and started to put our belongings back in (in plastic totes, mind you), we noticed that the walls were damaged. Upon closer inspection, we discovered it had nothing to do with the water damage- termites had nearly destroyed the entire interior. In fact, the destruction was so bad that our door to the unit fell off it's hinges, tore down the frame, and termites went EVERYWHERE. I called the office and told them I needed my door fixed immediately- I didn't have room in my apartment for our Christmas decorations and the like. It took them almost a MONTH to fix the door. I finally had to give up and move our things to Public Storage down the road. That same month, I put down a deposit to use the key card for 24 hour gym access. I thought it was convenient since I worked late hours at the time and didn't always feel like driving to the gym. They took my money, gave me a card, and the next night when I went to use it- it didn't work. I asked the office and they said the key card reader had been broken for about six months- then refused to return my deposit until move out. Just another way to nickel and dime you. Also that summer, and during the summer of 2009, we were barely able to use any of the three swimming pools. At least ten times during the summer months, the health department actually shut down the water for being 'contaminated.' I called the office to ask what was going on and they said they couldn't find the right pool company for the job. Come on now- it's South Florida- EVERYONE owns a pool company. It was on the news- research it if you want. And whatever you do, beware of the ravage dogs- a pitbull actually jumped off of one of the second story balconies while we were there and attacked our friend's dog. They allow the meanest, nastiest dogs in there- and it's nothing against pitbulls, even a Poodle can be ruthless. This was only the beginning- trashy neighbors (not all of them, but a few), cops constantly visiting for domestic (there was even a shooting), people with five vehicles parking them all in the front spots for days at a time- the list of complaints goes on and on and on. My biggest reason for complaining about Union Square has to do with the management. You really don't have a property manager- she's never there, you meet her once, and the rest of the time she's like a ghost. Instead, you get to deal with the property's bookkeeper, -----. It's puzzling to me, as a business owner, that a bookkeeper has more power than the property manager- and what's worse is that she's difficult, rude and, above all, out of her league. Truthfully, we avoided the office whenever possible- always paid the rent, never complained, never gave our neighbors trouble. So when it came time to move at the end of 2009- I didn't forsee any problems. We had chosen to move into a bigger place in a nicer neighborhood so we gave 90 days notice that we would be leaving at the end of February. I called the office and one of the girls there told me that was when my lease was up. After signing another lease, paying another deposit, and talking to the office at least another three times- I was then informed, by -----, that our lease was not up until the end of March. I explained the situation and instead of being professional and admitting that they were wrong, we were informed that we would be obligated to pay for March. After fighting with -----, she handed over the number to corporate. My husband called and no one would tell us anything- not the name of the person in charge, what their address was, anything. I called back and demanded a mailing address to send a complaint and was told to 'screw off' by a secretary. I did some research, had a lawyer friend reach out to them, and the matter was handled- all professionally like it should have been done in the first place. No thanks to ----- and the constant turntable of leasing agents she had in the office with her at the time. The apartments are fine- maintenance was never a problem, most of our neighbors were fine, the walls were thin but everyone was respectful, and the price was good for us. No complaints there. I just think if you want to rent an apartment from a professional company that's interested in what you think as a customer- you should look elsewhere. Union Square, as much as they advertise luxury, is still 'the hood.'
