The Dakota Apartments
Resident • 2006 - 2007 Not Recommended
It's a no frills apartment complex. There's no work out room, computer lounge, pool, balconies, courtyard, basketball courts, or any of that stuff that you find at some of the other apartment complexes. The location is pretty good. It's on Pensacola, down the street from FSU and TCC. Close to Baja's and Hobbit Hoagie's and there are some other restaurants in the area. The Night Nole passes by there at night also. But it can bring with it some unwanted noise if you have a bedroom that faces the street. The apartments are fairly small but do come with a washer/dryer. The bathrooms are small with a very tiny shower, no bath tub. The living room and kitchens are small as well. There is no kitchen table, but a breakfast bar with stools. The living room also came with a tv. The walls here are very thin. Between your own roommates and your neighbors next door or above you you'll be constantly subjected to noise. The utilities are insane here. If you select the utilities package you pay $40 a month each for a $40 utility allotment but there will always be an overage. The smallest overage we ever had was $50 dollars each. We had a small bug problem earlier in the year. Those crawly bugs kept appearing and we were a very clean group. Management didn't do anything about it, just told us to spray some stuff and they'd go away. There is free basic cable with HBO and free wireless internet. However the wireless network goes down often and management has stated that they don't personally operate the wireless network so it's not their problem. There isn't much parking. The complex is small but the parking lot is just far too small. There are only four visitor spots however they can only be used during the day, which doesn't make any sense. There is no visitor parking at night so don't think about having friends over unless they want their cars towed. Roommate matching can be tough at a lot of apartments but don't be surprised if you select it but find that you and your roommates are completely different in terms of living styles or study habits etc. Management isn't very good at all. After leasing season they're practically invisible. They don't really care for residents issues or concerns at all and won't hesitate to send out insulting memos to residents calling them "babies" and other things. But they do try to fix stuff in the apartment as soon as possible. Little things get fixed pretty quickly, bigger things tend to take a bit too long. The Dakota is just a really poor living choice. The apartment and the complex are below average to begin with but once you add in the poor and unhelpful management, the insane utilities, the tiny bathrooms and paper thin walls it goes from below average to just plain bad. Save yourself the trouble and live somewhere else.
