Resident 2009 - 2011

2/15/2011

I have lived here for almost two years because I did not have a car and needed to be within walking distance to FSU's campus. For that reason alone I have dealt with this terrible apartment for as long as I have. To be fair, the spaces are quite adorable, and provided you are lucky enough not to run into any maintenance issues, you'd have an attractive apartment. For the price you pay to live here you certainly do not receive the type of customer service (timely repairs, any type of useful assistance from the office workers...etc.) that you would receive at other apartments in Tallahassee. The parking situation is inexcusable. The resident's parking lot is almost always empty, yet the company policy is to NOT ISSUE visitors parking passes. Make no mistake, University Lofts is located in a rather sketchy part of town. In fact, just this past Saturday a group of 5 students were robbed at shotgun point at the dorm parking lot across Dewey Street from this location (See FSU Alert: http://java.apps.fsu.edu/roller/fsualert/entry/02_12_11_10_ Your visitors are expected to find street parking in an unsafe part of town. I have never lived in an apartment complex that did not provide permanent visitors parking passes to residents or at least have a few spaces that are designated as visitor spots. They do give you the option to drive all the way across town to get a temporary pass from Professional Parking Services (which will only be good for 24 hrs). They don't keep them on site so you need to do this every single time you have a guest... which is very hard when you don't have a car. The apartment building is located behind a strip of bars (the Tennessee Strip) that is quite popular with undergraduates. If you hope to study in your apartment at any point in the evening on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, you can just forget about it. You can always expect the street parking situation to be crowded at this time. You will be able to hear live bands playing at Floyd's and Poor Paul's. You will also be able to hear the stereo system contests that seem to happen spontaneously at 3am on Friday nights in the McDonald's parking lot. Be prepared for loud neighbors that have no respect for common areas. The amount of trash that accumulates on the grounds during the course of a weekend is disgusting. You should never walk in the grassy areas because you will step in dog crap... and I don't even want to know what is in the sand of the volleyball court. Be prepared for neighbors who steal any packages that are left at your door (if you for some reason decide to live here you should always require a signature for delivery... just a tip), it's not like you can have the package delivered to the office. When you go into the office to ask a question about anything at all, you should anticipate that you are probably inconveniencing these individuals. You are the last priority on their minds, otherwise they might answer the phone 1 out of 20 times you call. In fact, it was the attitude of the young lady working in the office right now that prompted me to finally break down and write a review/warning about this place. After living here for almost two years with a lease agreement that says my water bill is included in my rent, University Lofts began to charge me for my water usage. I paid this fee twice, because I did not have time to track down an office person to chat about the situation and did not want to be delinquent on any of my accounts. After finally discussing it with the gentleman working at that time (this particular person was only here for two weeks before a new person showed up), I was told I could be removed from the list of people getting billed for water but since I paid two months already he could not refund the money. I have had random crazy (possibly homeless) people pounding on my door at 2 a.m. for so long that I've had to call the police. This has happened on more than one occasion and it was terrifying each time. There is supposed to be a guard on duty in the evenings, but whether or not this is true depends upon who happens to be managing the apartment at the moment. I have also come home from the grocery store only to witness a swat team raid on the apartment below me- I believe the tenant was selling something he shouldn't have been. I will say that the current maintainence crew has been very helpful... this has not been true for all of them, but the current crew(Will in particular) is quite responsive to any requests you have. They are not miracle workers, though, and I have had to have my drains unclogged several times only to have them clog again after a few weeks. I have heard from other residents that this happens to them as well. I strongly caution against living at this place. My poor parents will be so relieved when I finally get to move. There are many nicer, less expensive apartments in safer parts of Tallahassee. Do yourself a favor and keep looking!!!!
