Resident 2013

CHECK YOUR CHARGES AT MOVE OUT! I just moved out and was charged for carpet replacement and paint. The carpet looked terrible when I moved in and so did the paint. I put it on my move in inspection and still got charged. My roommates and I got charged for heavy paint too - what does that even really mean? As soon as I started trying to dispute it, I was put on the back burner - I couldn't ever get anyone on the phone that could help me, and I was never allowed to talk to the manager. Finally, I contacted the corporate office asking for the proper documentation to support the charges: an invoice showing the original carpet installation, the calculations they used to determine how much I was charged, an invoice proving that after I moved out the carpet was in fact replaced with new carpet, and last the invoice from the painter showing that the extra charges for "heavy paint." After that, suddenly the charges were a mistake and should have been charged to someone else. I find that hard to believe. I know someone else who lived there 10 years ago, and the same thing happened to her. Don't get scammed by them! Dispute your charges, and make them show proof for what they are charging you for! It makes me so angry that this management group is taking advantage of students who most likely don't know their rights as a renter. Here's some advice about carpet: if you have damaged it and are expected to pay for replacement, you should only be paying for the life left on the carpet. Most carpet has a life of about 6 years depending on the quality. If you live there for 2 years, and the carpet was brand new when you moved in, you should only be paying for the 4 years of life that would have been left on the carpet, so 2/3 of the price of the original carpet. You should also request proof that the carpet was changed after you moved out too, especially here! I just can't believe that I was charged for carpet that looked terrible when I moved in, and the person who lived there before me left with no penalty. I doubt that. I'm sure we were both charged, and maybe even the person before them too.
