Resident ā€¢ 2005 - 2009

1/31/2015

When I first moved here to this complex in 2005, I LOVED it - and did so until I moved in 2009. In that time, I experienced 3 property management companies. The fist 2 were wonderful. The last one Steven Bell - let's just say this, unless I am desparate for a place to live, or I have a complete "Wow", opinion transforming experience, I will NEVER choose to rent from another Steven Bell property. In 2008 - august, at the time of invitation to lease renew, never missing or delinquent with rent in the 3+ yrs there, i proactively notified the onsite property manager that my company was going through some changes - but going month to month was a a huge increase. I was told they would work with me. Turns out, my company told me I was "safe" and I renewed the lease in September. In November, my company changed its mind and ousted my whole department. I now was faced with having to break my lease just 3 months in (Jan '09) and pay that fee, pay to move, and deal with being unemployed. I scrubbed my apartment clean and moved out, unfortunately at 7pm on 31st of Jan instead of before 5pm. So, along with break lease fees, I am charged for part of February's rent, charged 25 dollars for an empty cardboard box I forgot to take, and $50 for a DRY-ROTTED blind. Obviously not caused by misuse. My account was sent to a collections agency, while I was trying to "negotiate" with them. To prevent damage to my credit, I paid up Some years pass. It is now 2012 late summer. I was on the hunt for a new apartment. I LOVED this place while I was there and knew enough that office staff turns over, so I was not going to hold the past against a few personalities. I go to look at a unit. I notice the complex and leasing office now looks a bit worn but had read they were doing renovations, so I didn't worry too much. When I enter the leasing office, there is only one rude woman in the office. She has to show a couple of units. Locks me downstairs in the clubhouse (no place to sit because the rooms down there are only accessible by residents) instead making sure that a potential resident was comfotable. After 30 minutes, she returns and releases me from prison and asks how she can help. I tell her what I am looking for. This is where my opinion of Steven Bell Properties takes a turn for the worse. I see a unit that is one level below my old unit - and it's been upgraded. She looks up my history and still shows an outstanding balance. With my EXCELLENT credit, I knew she was mistaken. When I tell her that record is incorrect and that my credit history proves so, she gets nasty and retorts that their records say otherwise and credit reports don't necessarily show this (then what do you run them for?), and I'd have to prove I paid it. I responded that whether I prove it or not, that they were poor in their handling of my exit and have deteriorated in customer service in the years since, and that I would not be renting from them. I leave. She locks the door. The next day I send proof along with a complaint to the office about their poor records management (you could tell me I owe but not that I paid. Come on now!), and poor treatment from the start of my visit to the end. The main office manager calls back confirming my record has been cleared, saying nothing more than, "I understand you no longer desire considering a new apartment within our community. I wanted to confirm your account has been updated. Have a nice day!" No apology, what could we have done differently? Nothing. I did not even get the chance to respond. If I stay renting in apartment communities, the only way I would consider this complex again is if it is no longer a Steven Bell property and a better property management company. Spend your money elsewhere. Renting from an apartment community means you are renting an entire experience, not just your unit, from the leasing office to the gate, to the grounds, to you home, to the dumpster, to the maintenance crew, to the added amenities. No place is perfect, for sure. But, consider well this and other reviews here.
